A Time to Observe and Reflect

Please join me on Monday, May 25, as the Village of Palmetto Bay and the nation observes Memorial Day by honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. This Federal holiday was originally known as Decoration Day. It originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official Federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades - it also unofficially marks the beginning of summer. Locally, American Legion Marlin Moore Post (133 at 16401 SW 90 Avenue) is hosting a special event on May 25 starting at 10 a.m. I plan to be there along with members of the entire Village Council, so please join us for this program that includes memorial services and flag ceremony, and hot dogs and hamburgers. Have a safe and pleasant holiday.

Downtown Redevelopment Task Force
Street Infrastructure Reviewed

Members of the Downtown Redevelopment Task Force met May 20 to review a "Complete Street Policy," a design model that considers all potential users and their behaviors during the design process. The model takes into account pedestrians, bicyclists, cars, buses, etc., and incorporates a "complete" design that accommodates all of the expected users. They also discussed the upcoming "Regulatory Plan" that concisely describes the regulations controlling the form, architecture, and overall look of the future downtown area. Additionally, Manager Silva reviewed details of a recently released Traffic Calming Initiatives report. Stay tuned for news regarding our emerging live-work-play downtown district in the Village's Southwest corner along US-1 and Franjo Road.

Budget Season 2015-16
Workshops Hit the Road

The 2015-16 budget planning season is underway with several meetings planned over the next few months. In addition to official public meetings at Village Hall, at least one town-hall style workshop will be hosted in each of the Village's three Districts through the summer. Please stay tuned to dates and times. Meanwhile, feel free to review this report presented to the Village Council at their May 18 Budget Workshop.
