Happy Holidays! We were unable to send out our October newsletter and so we have lots of
news to share about what has been going on here for the past several months.
We hosted the AHHA approvals (see report below) and also attended the
Holstein approvals in Neumunster. In order that we don't overwhelm you with
all the news at once, we will spread it out over the next several issues, so
keep reading. Don't forget to book your 2011 breedings now; early booking
discounts expire on December 31st! We hope you have a wonderful, peaceful
holiday season! |

Limtender |

Limtender |
Limtender Shines at Neumunster
While our young Limbus son Limtender did not get to the final ring of approved stallions at the early-November Holsteiner keuring in Neumunster, we were nonetheless thrilled with watching him participate and took note our great fortune at every moment. Limtender, our very first foal produced in Europe, made it through the vigorous six-month selection procedure which starts with approximately four hundred 2 year-old stallions in April each year. From the Contender mare Tyrah, a full sister to the international jumpers Controe and Chogun, Limtender made it through each successive selection to become one of the 71 stallions presented for approval this year. Throw in the risks of injury, poor vettings, and other complications, and the chances of getting a stallion into the approvals in any given year are less than one percent! To our further amazement, this stallion is the first produced and presented by an American breeder and owner in at least the past ten years! In the end, we decided the best option for our young prodigy was to allow him to be sold in the auction at Neumunster, where he was purchased for a top rider in Poland. We expect he may also be used for breeding there, based on his outstanding pedigree. Here’s hoping we hear more great things about Limtender in the future! |

Other News from Schleswig-Holstein
We are excited to report pregnancies for 2011 from some very interesting stallions! Tyrah, the Contender mare who produced Limtender, is in foal to Quirado (Quidam de Revel x Corrado I). Lady Levisto (Levisto x Calvin) is in foal to For Ever Jump (For Pleasure x Chambertin). The mare Willa (Coriano x Contender ) is in foal once again to Calido. Our young Casall mare from Lady Levisto is scheduled to go under saddle in anticipation of the upcoming mare test for 3 year olds. While in Neumunster we were able to visit all the horses we have in Tornesch, including these mares as well as our other younger stock. Updated photos of these horses have now been posted to our website. You can visit them by clicking here. |

BWP National Tour Results In September we reported on the results of Dr. Tiffany Attebury’s Mezcalero filly, Konteza, at her BWP inspections. The filly, from a daughter of Doncaster, received a high score and, it turns out now, is ranked in the top five fillies and in the top twelve overall foals of 2010 on the BWP tour! Congratulations! Other Mezcalero foals presented at BWP this year were Bannockburn Farm’s (Indiana) Kahuna B from the Simsalabim daughter Enchantment, as well as Iconic Bay Equestrian’s (Florida) Kinetic Bay from the mare Naivitie by Branco. Congratulations, Dr. Attebury! |

Artesana OHF scores premium select at AHHA inspections |
AHHA Inspections at October Hill Farm
October Hill hosted its ninth inspection in ten years this fall! Judges Michael Gonnell of Holstein and Arlene Rigdon of Kansas arrived with the AHHA’s BRC Co-chair Cheryl Kellerman to conduct a very successful site of quality horses. A total of fifteen mares and foals were judged at the site, representing some of the top area breeders. Mare Champion of the site was the foundation mare Artesana OHF, by October Hill’s Alamo out of a Coriano dam, scoring Premium Select with a total of 50 points. Reserve Mare Champion was Waterbug OHF, by Cicera’s Icewater from a Lavall I mother, scoring Premium with a score of 48. Also entering the premium book was the October Hill mare Ophelia OHF, a daughter of the late Grand Prix jumper Ocordo from a Hanoverian mother. The mare Uwita OHF by Coconut Grove from a Cassini I mother also entered the mare books.
The foals presented by October Hill Farm scored as follows: Coco Quito OHF by Coconut Grove from Uphorea by Quite Capitol scored a premium total of 16 with an 8 on movement; China Girl OHF by Mezcalero from Uvita OHF by Coconut Grove scored a premium total of 16 with a 9 on movement; Contrada OHF by Coconut Grove from the mare Ginie I by Capitol scored merit with a 14 (the poor little orphan baby did not want to leave his human friends to show off his moves!). |

Unfettered by Riverman x Lordship |
Additional AHHA Inspection Results
At the Washington site, the AHHA awarded premium status to the mare Unfettered, a granddaughter of the late Lordship, the founding stallion of October Hill Farm. Unfettered is owned by Patty Vasey and was bred by M. & J. Forest. The mare received 49 points. Also at the site, Unfettered’s 2010 foal received premium marks! Congratulations!
At the Virginia site, the yearling colt Casperzac by Cascani received a merit score of 14! Bred and owned by Carey Knouff, Casperzac is from the mare Sandara by Mehmetori.
At the Pollyrich Farm in California, CataLena by Mezcalero, a 2010 filly from the mare Wellington by Acord III, also received a merit score of 14 for her breeder and owner Cherie Bell. Congratulations to everyone! |

Secret Agent by Coconut Grove We heard recently from our wonderful client Evan Gerhardt of New York. He just had to brag on his Coconut Grove colt, Secret Agent, a two-year old from a Starman mother. Evan wrote, “Our Coconut Grove colt is doing great, he still hasn’t had a bad day yet. He loves to jump and is fearless! My wife and I have been on him a couple dozen times bareback and he could care less. The plan is to take him to Devon in June. His dam will be going to Virginia to train with Joe Fargis and we will hopefully send him along too and go to Upperville after that. We'll see how it goes!” Evan had more great news to share about an expected 2011 foal from Coconut Grove from a Capital III mare. “We had our mare, "Chi", checked a few weeks ago and it looks like she’s going to have a filly. Our vet said she was 90% sure, so I've got my fingers crossed that she’s right. It would be a great addition to our breeding program.” Congratulations, Evan! |

Coconut Cardo by Coconut Grove sold The AHHA approved son of Coconut Grove, Coconut Cardo, has been sold by Branscomb Farm of Half Moon Bay, California, to Kathryn Cooper. The stallion, now six years old, was bred and raised in Texas before going to Branscomb Farm. He has been showing this year in the 1.10 divisions and is placing well in large classes with his new owner. Coconut Cardo is from a Cantour mother. More news will likely be forthcoming from this very well-bred stallion. |

Octoberhill Tip of the Month

Tip of the Month: Happy Haircut!
Winter has only just arrived and the horses have burst into full coats seemingly overnight. Our staff is hard at work on the first body clips of the season, and due to their expertise, the horses always look great! Though there are many tips we can offer for taking your horse from fuzzy to fabulous with a hip clip, you must first always make sure your blades are sharp and that your horse is clean. A bath is the best way to eliminate dirt that can hamper your clipping chore, but a good curry and brushing will help as well. New blades are recommended, but you can stretch your old ones out with a good sharpening. Remember that dull blades make your clippers run hot and cause lines in the hair. To keep the blades cool, clean them often with a dip in rubbing alcohol, and keep the motor and blades well oiled. If your blades to get hot, stop and let them cool, and remember to brush excess hair off.
If you are seeing lines in the clipped areas, make sure you clip against the direction of the hair growth. You can also try crisscrossing the clippers over this line, as if making an “x” over it. Make sure to finish your clipping duties by cleaning and storing your clippers properly. |
