ABILENE, Kan. - The annual Symphony at Sunset D-Day Commemorative Concert with the Salina Symphony will be held Saturday, June 1, at 8:30 p.m., on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home. The concert coincides with the exhibit opening of World War II Remembered: Leaders, Battles & Heroes, a three-year commemoration of WWII marking the 70th anniversaries of the war and its aftermath.
World War II Remembered focuses on the personal stories of unsung heroes and the lesser-known events of the war. Visitors will learn about the major theaters of operation and special units including the Tuskegee Airmen and Native American Code Talkers. They will also discover the brave contributions of the Ritchie Boys - Jewish refugees from Hitler's Germany who returned to Europe as U.S. soldiers. The heroic stories of women at war and on the working home front will also be featured. Core exhibits in the Museum and Library buildings will be enhanced by special supplements as we move through the war one year at a time beginning with Operation Torch (North Africa), Operation Avalanche (Italy) and Operation Citadel (Western Russia). The core exhibit in the Library building, titled Be Ye Men of Valor: The Allies of World War II, will open later this fall in October.
The symphony concert and exhibit opening are complemented by entertainment and activities. The Arts Council of Dickinson County will host Dickinson County Stage - a venue for local musicians offered twice a year. This allows area talent to perform for their friends and family. Food and beverage vendors, including beer and wine, will open at 4 p.m. selling a variety of meal options. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs and have dinner on the grounds. No outside food or coolers will be allowed.
