Brown Bag Lunch- Battle of Stalingrad

ABILENE, Kan. -  The Battle of Stalingrad will be the topic of a brown bag lunch discussion at the Eisenhower Presidential Library on Thursday, March 14. This free program is open to public and scheduled for noon in the Visitors Center Auditorium.

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies at the University of Kansas (KU) is hosting Russian historian Ivan Kurilla from Volgograd State University. Kurilla is currently a visiting research scholar at George Washington University and will be giving two talks at KU, one on "The Use and Misuse of History in Russia," the other on "What do Russians Make of America?" While visiting Kansas, Kurilla will tour the Eisenhower Presidential Library and lead the brown bag discussion on "Memorialization of the Battle of Stalingrad and the Use of the Battle in Contemporary Russian Politics."

Kurilla's special scholarly interests are on 19th and 20th Century American History and Russian-American relations. He is also the editor of a journal, Americana, and has several well-received publications in books and articles. Kurilla is a native of Volgograd (Stalingrad) and has also written on the history of the city and the Battle of Stalingrad.

"This program is timely as we near the opening of our World War II Remembered: Leaders, Battles and Heroes exhibit this June. The Battle of Stalingrad was a major and decisive battle of the war and will be one of many 70th anniversaries we mark with this three and a half year exhibit," states Karl Weissenbach.

The Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home, a nonpartisan federal institution, is part of the Presidential Libraries network operated by the National Archives and Records Administration. Presidential Libraries promote understanding of the presidency and the American experience. We preserve and provide access to historical materials, support research, and create interactive programs and exhibits that educate and inspire.
