Seven Days of Free Family Fun
Beginning June 28 and continuing for 7 fun, free, event-filled days, Philadelphia will celebrate our nation's independence in style. A week of activities is planned culminating once again with Philly Fourth of July Jam on the Parkway and a spectacular fireworks display over the Museum of Art. Here's a day-by-day rundown of the week's activities, but for more detailed information visit the Wawa Welcome America! website.
Saturday, June 28: Head to the Shops at Liberty Place for the Liberty Block Party between noon-10 p.m. and enjoy live entertainment, unique crafts and delicious food at the largest block party of the summer. Sunday, June 29: From noon-4 p.m., help create one of Philadelphia's famed murals together with the Mural Arts Program at a community paint day in Mantua. Monday, June 30: This is a great day to bring the kids. The first of Wawa's Go 4th and Learn programs will be held at the Academy of Natural Sciences where kids will learn about science and the Wawa Dairy with a hands on exhibit beginning at 10 a.m. In the evening, the first outdoor movie of the week will take place at Franklin Square with a screening of Disney's Frozen beginning at 9 p.m. Come early and enjoy free mini-golf, free giveaways and carousel rides.
Tuesday, July 1: Kids can Go 4th and Learn about fitness at the enormous Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse in East Fairmount Park between 10 a.m. and noon. At 8 p.m. the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra will return for their 7th year to the River Stage at Penn's Landing to perform a free community concert ending with a small fireworks salute! At 9 p.m., the second outdoor movie screening will take place in Rittenhouse Square with a showing of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Wednesday, July 2: In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, a photo exhibition of 55 photos telling the story of Philadelphia's civil rights activism will be on display at PHL, the Philadelphia International Airport. Also beginning at 10 a.m., head to the National Constitution Center for a Go 4th and Learn program about history. Enjoy free admission all day (courtesy of Wawa) and be sure to see the exhibition on the history of the hoagie! Speaking of hoagies, this is Wawa Hoagie Day and 4.5 tons of hoagies will be served free on Independence Mall beginning at noon. At 9 p.m. a Philly classic movie, Rocky, will be screened at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Thursday, July 3: Peter Nero and the Philly Pops! perform on the steps of Independence Hall at 8 p.m. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy this free Philly tradition. Friday, July 4: Start the day at the steps of Independence Hall for the Celebration of Freedom Ceremony at 10 a.m. Afterwards, from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m., the Philadelphia Independence Day Parade winds its way throughout Historic Philadelphia. The Let Freedom Ring Ceremony starts on Independence Square at 1 p.m. and concludes with the symbolic tapping of the Liberty Bell. Then join the Party on the Parkway, the party goes from noon- 7 p.m, and enjoy food, games, music and other fun activities while waiting for the "largest free concert in America" to begin! Beginning at 7 p.m. musical guests take the stage, including the Roots, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Aloe Blacc and Vicci Martinez. A spectacular fireworks display over the Philadelphia Museum of Art concludes the celebration! Happy Birthday America!

Philadelphia has become a destination city for music lovers and the Summer 2014 lineup offers something for everyone's taste in music. Held on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Philly 4th of July Jam, as mentioned above, is the largest free concert in America with the Roots, Ed Sheeran, Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Hudson headlining. Now in its third year, the 2-day Budweiser Made in America Festival returns to Philadelphia over Labor Day Weekend, August 30-31. Made in America is bigger and better than ever, going bi-coastal this year, with the city of Los Angeles hosting a simultaneous festival. With multiple stages and dozens of performers, Made-in-America is a massive music event. The line-up for Philadelphia includes Kanye West, Kings of Leon, and Pharrell Williams. Tickets are required for this concert festival and there are early-bird specials for 2 day passes! Other music festivals in and around the Philadelphia area include the 2nd Street Festival in Northern Liberties curated by the Philadelphia Folksong Society and the Reggae in the Park festival held at the Mann Music Center both on August 3. The Mad Decent Block Party will be held at Festival Pier on August 8 and the Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party is hosting multiple free concerts throughout the summer. Jay Z and Beyonce bring their On the Run Tour to Philadelphia's Citizen's Bank Park on July 5 and Bruno Mars is a ferry ride across the Delaware River at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden on July 17. There are so many wonderful things to see and do in Philadelphia so it's always a struggle to pare them down to a few highlights for our newsletters. Now is a great time to go to America's First Zoo (yes, it's the Philadelphia Zoo!) and see the Treetop Trail, the Great Ape Trail and the new Big Cat Crossing. This animal exploration trail system, called Zoo360 is the first in the world and it's here in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Official Visitors Guide is a great resource to have when you are planning a trip to Philadelphia. This quarterly guide is available in three formats: print, on-line, or on your iOS device. When you are in town, you can pick up the latest edition at one of the Independence Visitors Centers, the PA Convention Center, Amtrak's 30th Street Station, the PHL International Airport or at local attractions. You can also request to have a guide mailed directly to your home. You can view the online guide now and you can also search "PHL Visitors Guide" in the app store to download the free app to your ipad or iphone. This guide is chock-full of information about the different Philly neighborhoods, sights to see and things to do, restaurants, cafes, accommodations and more.
