From Generation to Generation:

What I Love About St. Paul's

Dear Friends in Christ,

I will have to make some careful choices from the many reasons I have to love St. Paul's I know the most significant is centered around the many years I had here with my parents, growing up as I did in this lovely old parish with their commitment to the church and its good works and their helping me as I developed a strong faith as well as a love for St. Paul's. I have benefitted so much from their example, teaching, and legacy.

The Communion of Saints is very important to me and I am always close to some kind of an experience especially during the Eucharist. I feel a closeness to my parents that is not simply a fond memory but is a real presence that I am quite aware of. I have the same feeling about the long line of saints that have worshipped God and worked in this House of Prayer. I am privileged to be allowed to continue doing some of these tasks as are all of us. When I polish the altar rail or launder church linens I am surrounded in my thoughts and feelings with all the many hands and hearts that over the years have cared for these same old and beautiful liturgical items that have been used prayerfully and reverently - many of them for over 100 years.

This beautiful, living, and breathing holy space creates for me the setting and prayerful atmosphere where this Communion of Saints can happen. I am humbled by the realization that I am privileged to be able to perform some of these tasks, and that I and everyone that has

worshipped or is worshipping now within this space are part of the sacred tapestry of St. Paul's long history.

Secondly, I love the history of this old parish and as I continue to work with it bringing some of its interesting and inspiring stories about its people, its spiritual and devoted clergy, and its many activities for everyone to see, read, and learn about, I am more and more captivated myself by the church's heritage of the Anglo-catholic approach to liturgy and its music, which is ours to love and enjoy as part of our worship. The space is a holy space in part because of this long history of Anglo-catholicism that focuses historically on outreach programs speaking to its devotion to social issues, justice, and other programs outside its walls.

From the early days with the parish's support of missions and young congregations through more recent times with its support and sponsorship of our Hispanic sister congregation, El Santo Nino Jesus, the emphasis been on reaching beyond the walls with justice and spreading its support to the needs of others.

St. Paul's is a caring community showing its love and concern for all. This plus my awareness in this place of the reality of the Communion of Saints, and the church's history of Anglo-catholicism with its heritage of holy and spiritual worship and a focus on social outreach are a few of the things I love about St. Paul's,

With love,

Peg Varney
