B3 - Bikes, Burgers and Bowling
"I can't wait until Sunday"

Be a part of the 1st annual Bikes, Burgers & Bowling event - B3.

For starters, donate your gently-used bikes to children in Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle on June 3rd through June 8th, from 4 to 7:00 at Sparians North Hills.  Then, plan to ride your own bike in the event with your family and friends on June 9th.  You begin at Sparians North Hills and BIKE to Tyler's Tap Room downtown, eat a delicious BURGER, then ride back to Sparians for BOWLING.

The event benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle so when you participate, you are helping children find a mentor.  Register on our website at BBBSTriangle.org: $20/person or $45/family - and a Big/Little match can ride together for just $25.  Registration includes the ride, the burger and the bowling - plus lots of fun festival attractions like music, prizes and more.  Experienced riders will enjoy a 14-mile round trip (with major hills!) on a designated route, partially on the beautiful Raleigh Greenway. All others will enjoy fun and games at Sparians.  Tell your friends, family and neighbors and post it on your social media and community bulletin boards.  It's family fun for the entire community.  See you there!

Real Life Mentoring Stories
man and boy on the bench

Tre and Mr. Cooper have a deep mutual respect for each other.

Male role models were difficult to come by for Little Brother Tre, according to his mother, Sharon. With a Dad who is incarcerated, Sharon realized that a positive African American male influence was important for her then 11-year-old son. "I wanted to keep him out of trouble while I was at work. However, he does help take care of his two nephews, so he does know a thing or two about responsibility," says Sharon.

Sharon called Big Brothers Big Sisters and was introduced to Big Brother Herman Cooper, a retiree who volunteers in his church and with individuals who are physically challenged. Despite their differing lifestyles, the now 14-year-old Tre and "Mr. Cooper" have developed shared interests, including basketball and football, and a deep mutual respect over the past three years.

Tre attends Mr. Cooper's family birthday parties and various gatherings at the Shiloh A.M.E. Church. Recently, after Tre expressed an interest in raising fish at home, Mr. Cooper gave him a used 45-gallon-fish tank. This tank is now home to many different fish including a Silver Dollar fish, a Tin Foil fish, and a Catfish. Tre enjoys learning about and taking care of the fish. He makes sure the tank is clean and the fish receive the care they need to thrive.

Sharon feels her son finally has the support he needs. "Mr. Cooper is a positive force for Tre because he will speak with him about things," she says. And according to Big Brother Mr. Cooper, "Tre is a terrific young man. His mother has done a great job raising him!"

"JCPenney and Big Brothers Big Sisters team up for June round-up campaign
jcPenny

During all of June, jcpenney is allowing customers to round up at the register for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

JCPenney stores throughout the Triangle area will invite customers to round up purchases to the nearest dollar and will donate the difference to Big Brothers Big Sisters. In addition, jcpenney will donate $1 for every $50 gift card sold in June, up to $50,000, giving Big Brothers Big Sisters an opportunity to receive additional funding.

"We are so happy to have this opportunity to partner with local jcpenney stores for this fund-raising opportunity," said Kimberly Breeden, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters. "This allows people to shop and support us at the same time. Even those who like to shop online can help us during the month of June."

"Big Brothers Big Sisters Month" will allow all agencies to receive funds from the jcp cares round up program. Store team members will ask customers to round their purchases to the nearest dollar and the difference will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters during June.

Haggar also will run an in-store campaign: For any pair of Haggar pants purchased, Haggar will donate $1 to Big Brothers Big Sisters with a maximum contribution of $50,000.

7 Habits of Highly effective people who become "Mentors"

  1)  You have the potential to change a young person's life.
Now, don't be  intimidated by the weight of that

 2) It will get you to stop thinking about yourself all the time. Let's face      it: so much of people's mental energies are spent on ourselves -- our          hopes, our fears, our anxieties, our next Big Plan, our goals for the              future.

 3) It will help you stay hip and keep up with the times.

 4) You are helping build a better, more stable society.

 5) You will be able to broaden your perspective as well as your                horizons. Learning new things, understanding different cultures, and          enjoying new experiences are one of the great things about becoming a      mentor.

  6) You may end up with more than just a mentee -- but a new                  member of your family.

  7) The life you end up changing could be your own.

Ultimately, mentoring isn't a one-way process. It's a two-way street. It has the potential to change -- indeed, to radically transform -- not just one life, but two
