100 men campaign 2013
Greetings!

100 Men in 100 Days Recruitment Campaign Update
"I missed the game"

Our first event for the100 Men in 100 Days recruitment campaign kicked off in style at the PNC Arena on February 27th.  Men were able to watch the game from a premium suite donated by LORD Corporation and the PNC Arena.  We also enjoyed some great food sponsored by one of our mentors who owns Carolina Quality Pre-Owned cars.  It was great to see the interaction of the 25 like-minded men who filled the suites because of their concern for young men in our community.  Also in attendance were corporate representatives from Blue Cross Blue Shield, Coastal Federal Credit Union, and others who agreed to support Big Brothers Big Sisters' campaign of recruiting 100 Men in 100 Days.  With so much going on, you may be able to see how I missed the game!

I would venture to say several men also missed a portion of the game because they were engaged in great conversation as well as interacting with men who were sharing their passion for mentoring and the impact it has in their lives. Three of our current mentors had an opportunity to share their stories with potential mentors.  Each person who attended listened attentively as men expressed how impactful mentoring was for them as well as for their mentee.   A couple of the men also brought their little brothers with them to enjoy the game.  There is nothing like exposing young boys to new positive experiences that could possibly impact their lives for the better forever.

The highlight of the evening was not during the game, but during half time when men gathered in a circle and verbally expressed that they wanted to become a mentor to a young boy who desperately needs one.   What a powerful moment to have men make a commitment to make a difference in a child's life!  Check out this quote from Sean who attended the event.

"If you are like me, you have time that could be better spent by serving our youth. We should have men on the waiting list not boys"

Would you like to attend our next event, become a mentor, or sponsor an event?  Please contact Barron Damon by phone at (919-850-9772) or by email at [email protected] for additional information on how you can "Start Something" with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle and SwingPals
on "Par" to help children facing adversity
SwingPals

If you ever have an opportunity talk with Doug Hodges for a few minutes, you will quickly discover how passionate he is about helping young people realize their full potential through mentoring and golf.  Doug credits a lot of his success in life to his involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters as a long-time mentor, board member, donor and supporter.  About three years ago he combined his passions for mentoring and golf and created a program called SwingPals, which teaches underprivileged children the game of golf while partnering with prospective mentors for Big Brothers Big Sisters.  The partnership is certainly on "par" to reach several children and volunteers throughout the Triangle.  Below Doug explains how you can get involved with the SwingPals program.

Are you interested in joining SwingPals and learning to play golf or improving your game while mentoring a child?

Male and Female Volunteers Needed: FREE PGA Lessons and range balls for a year

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle is pleased to offer prospective

mentors the opportunity to meet a child through golf. Now men and women can

sign-up for free PGA golf lessons. No golf experience is necessary; just an

earnest desire to have fun with a child while playing golf. Through our

relationship with SwingPals, we are currently enrolling adult volunteers,

12 men and 12 women, who would like to spend quality time with a child,

while they learn to play golf. Your love and encouragement will help a child

grow, learn and enjoy greater success in high school and college.

Other complimentary benefits include:

  •   PGA golf instruction
  •   Range balls after your lessons are completed
  •   Participation in the season finale Tournament of Champions

SwingPals offers golf lessons to potential matches beginning in April.

Sessions are offered at Falls Village Golf Club in Durham.

Two "Big" Brands - One "Big" Scoop
Ben & Jerry's selects Big Brothers Big Sisters as their charity for
Free Cone Day  (April 9, 2013)

It's not very often that everyone is invited to the party.  Ben & Jerry's National Free Cone Day is the exception.  Ben & Jerry's in Chapel Hill selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle as their charity for this year's Free Cone Day.  Free Cone Day is not just about free ice cream, but a way for Ben & Jerry's to say thank you to their great customers who support their business throughout the year.  It is also a day filled with entertainment, and fun activities for kids. Big Brothers Big Sisters will also have an information table set up to recruit volunteer mentors as well as enroll children who are in need of a big brother or a big sister.  Free Cone Day is April 9 from 12:00 to 8:00 PM.  Please come out and support Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle and Ben & Jerry's.  Donations and proceeds will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle.

What's your favorite Ben & Jerry's Flavor?  Go to our Facebook page and let us know your favorite Ben and Jerry's flavor. Let's see which flavor gets the most votes.  We will see you at Ben & Jerry's for Free Cone Day.
