Brexit risks for South African agricultural exports

The EU-SADC Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) was signed two weeks shy of a referendum in which Britain is set to make a decision on whether to stay as a part of the European Union (EU) or not. South Africa's celebrations of the EPA were beset by uncertainty over the seemingly possible reality of an EU without Britain.   A number of analysts have noted the risks associated with the possible departure of Britain from the EU - ranging from job losses, threats to global growth, capital and investment flight, among others.  Agbiz economists, Wandile Sihlobo and Tinashe Kapuya, share their thoughts in the linked article»
What would Brexit mean for South African wine exports?

Under the new EU-SADC Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), SA's wine quota increased to 110 million litres (up from 48 million litres under the Trade Development Cooperation Agreement (TDCA)). Food inflation eases slightly against market expectation

Food_Prices Recent data from Statistics South Africa indicates that in May 2016, headline inflation eased to 6.1% year-on-year (y/y) from 6.2% y/y in the previous month. This was well below the market expectations of 6.4% y/y.

This decrease was largely on the back of a fall in food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation to 10.5% y/y, from 11.0% y/y in April 2016.  Agbiz economists, Wandile Sihlobo and Tinashe Kapuya, provides more information»

Mike Mlengana to take over as director-general of DAFF

SA's poultry imports have a deficit effect
Speaking at the 110th Avi Africa Conference in Kempton Park, Kevin Lovell, CEO of the South African Poultry Association, said in 2015, poultry imports accounted for a massive R4,6-billion in an industry that is among the most unprotected in the world, with applied average tariff protection equating to barely a few percent a year.
