Food product manufactures to remain under pressure as input costs continue to rise
The latest producer price index data (PPI) released by Statistics South Africa indicated that in April 2016, producer inflation slowed to 7% from 7.1% year-on-year (y/y), in March 2016. Meanwhile, the food products inflation accelerated to 10.9% from 10.5% y/y in March 2016. Find linked Agbiz economists' commentary.

Industry should prepare itself for another possible hike in the wheat import tariff
The South African wheat import tariff is set to increase further to levels between R1550 and R1591 per ton from the current level of R1 224 per ton. This is under the assumption that international wheat prices (US No 2HRW fob) remain at the current levels of US$193 per ton and the Rand/US dollar exchange rate at levels around R15,30. However, this expected increase might only be applicable if the industry role players submit an application for a revision of the tariff to the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) of South Africa. It's "all hands on deck" as the market awaits South Africa's 5th crop production estimates
There are a number of data releases this week in the South African agricultural markets. The key one is the National Crop Estimates Committee's (CEC) fifth production forecasts which are due for release this afternoon, May 26. In the previous estimates, there were some slight downward revisions in almost all the crops, except sunflower seed and soybeans which were revised upwards.
