South Africa at crossroads: Impact on and role of agro-food value chain?
- Dr John Purchase
This past week Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, together with Deputy Minister Mcebisi Jonas, met with members of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA), including Agbiz. The frank and open discussion focussed on government initiatives to address the challenges facing the economy and maximising the potential of the country. Tax Ombud presentation to NEDLAC

This past week the Tax Ombud presented to Nedlac's Public Finance & Monetary Policy Chamber on the establishment of the Tax Ombud. The Third Interim Report of the Katz Commission Proposal introduced the Tax Ombud to (a) protect taxpayer rights, and (b) mediate between taxpayers and revenue authorities, as well as to position it independently of SARS. The Tax Ombud may be contacted by e-mail at: complaints@taxombud.gov.za.

Profiling South Africa-China's agricultural trade relationship
- Tinashe Kapuya

From an agricultural perspective, the value of all trade in agricultural commodities, including inputs, grew from US$67 million to US$655 million over the same period.  Traditionally, South Africa has had a net deficit in terms of the agricultural trade balance. South Africa has imported more agricultural products from China than it exports in 13 of the last 15 years. It is only in the last 2 years that South Africa has attained a positive trade balance for agriculture with ChinaRead moreĽ
Stark contrast between current domestic and global sorghum markets
- Tinashe Kapuya and Wandile Sihlobo
Some time ago, the positive energy in the South African sorghum industry was palpable, driven by the prospect of national biofuel production. However, over the past two years, this positive energy seems to have subsided with no clear direction about the future of this national project. There were hopes that biofuel production would present market opportunities and, in turn, promote sorghum production across many parts of the country. Since none of these plans have materialised thus far, there has been a renewed interest among sorghum producers to explore export markets. Read moreĽ
