Board approved IFAMA 2014 in Cape Town, June 2014
Dr John Purchase and Ms Lindie Stroebel of Agbiz have participated in the 23rd International Food and Agribusiness Management Association (IFAMA) World Forum in Atlanta, Georgia, this week.
Together with partners in South Africa, a bid was submitted to the Board of IFAMA to host the 24th IFAMA World Forum in South Africa (Cape Town) on 15 to 19 June 2014, and this week it was announced that the bid was successful. The provisional theme is: "The road to 2050: Global drivers, African opportunities - The talent factor."
The South African ambassador to the USA, Mr Ebrahim Rasool, accepted the nomination on behalf of South Africa at the gala dinner, held at the World of Coke Cola in Atlanta, on Wednesday evening. The awarding of the IFAMA World Forum to South Africa and Africa is a major boost for the development of globally competitive agro-food value chains in Africa especially. Dr John Purchase was also elected to the Board of IFAMA at the Forum.

Special Economic Zones for South Africa
Mr Claud Baissac from Eunomix presented on 11 June to the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development on the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) for South Africa. Click to peruse the presentation. The South African Government has introduced new legislation (Special Economic Zones Bill) to facilitate the establishment of SEZ's in the underdeveloped areas of South Africa. While the principle of SEZ's is internationally recognized to ensure specific developmental outcomes, especially in strongly regulated economies, the concept does have drawbacks in terms of potential unintended consequences and heavy subsidisation that comes at a cost to the taxpayer. Opportunities for agribusinesses may arise as some of the development will be in rural areas.
