WEF releases Global Risks 2013 Report

WEFThe World Economic Forum's Global Risks 2013 report is developed from an annual survey of over 1,000 experts from industry, government, academia and civil society who were asked to review a landscape of 50 global risks. The global risk that respondents rated most likely to manifest over the next 10 years is severe income disparity, while the risk rated as having the highest impact if it were to manifest is major systemic financial failure. There are also two risks appearing in the top five of both impact and likelihood - chronic fiscal imbalances and water supply crisis. Please click here to peruse»
Agri SA welcomes the end of the farm workers strike in Western Cape
WC Farm

"Cosatu's announcement that the farm worker strike in the Western Cape had been called off is welcomed", said Johannes Möller, President of Agri SA.  "Whilst we acknowledge that farm workers' voice should be heard, we cannot condone their advisors and representatives' actions which led vulnerable people into an unprotected and violent strike.  Continuous misrepresentations on what was achievable within the legal framework and a view to economic sustainability, were also grossly disregarded by people who's credibility were accepted by especially the large number of seasonable and unemployed people", said Möller.

JADAFA Agricultural Outlook Brief:
Angola's Commodity Markets
Angola
Angola's agricultural economy is built around a developing commercial agricultural sector in which fish processing, food processing, brewing and tobacco production are the major industries. Data from the FAO (2012) shows that livestock numbers are increasing rapidly.  In 2011 Angola was a net importer of agricultural products with Portugal, South Africa and Brazil being their primary supplying markets. Over the past decade, South Africa has lost relative market share as a supplier of agricultural products into Angola. Access more information by clicking the links below:

Absa encourages Undercover Farming as an alternative in the increasingly drier climate conditions

Undercover Farming ExpoUndercover farming is increasingly gaining popularity amongst producers and many farmers are thinking about adopting this method of farming as an alternative in the increasingly drier climate, or to produce off-season products to improve their economic situation, says Ernst Janovsky, Head of Absa AgriBusiness. With this comment he confirms Absa AgriBusinesss' continued support for Undercover Farming, ahead of the Undercover Farming Expo. This expo, to be held near Pretoria from 5 to 7 March 2013, focuses on intensive farming techniques and farming industries.

Janovsky, says it makes perfect sense for Absa to be involved in this expo, as the time has come to invest in agriculture and more specific in undercover farming. "In analysing food security three challenges can be identified namely whether enough food can be produced to meet demand, whether the consumer can afford the food he/she wants and if the food is safe to eat. All these challenges can be addressed through the development of undercover farming." Read full media release»

The Unfercover Farming Expo will have generic sessions for specific deiciplines such as fruit, flowers and seedlings on the first two days and farm visits on day three.  For more information visit the Expo's official website at www.undercoverfarmingexpo.co.za or contact Hanlie Delport on +27 80 908 2295.
