Farmer worker unrestFollowing the media statements by The Minister of Labour, Ms Mildred Oliphant, on labour unrest and the sectoral determination in the agricultural sector, as well as media statements by both COSATU and FAWU, Agri-sector Unity Forum deemed it necessary to again confirm its position publicly in order to resolve the urgent and pressing issue of labour unrest and dissatisfaction, and to address matters of incitement and violence in the workplace. Min Oliphant In the last few months, South Africa has had to contend with a wave of strikes - legal and illegal in different sectors. Sadly, one of the defining features of these strikes has been the unacceptable and unjustifiable level of violence.

Let me take this opportunity first and foremost and condemn violence in any industrial action. Violence has no place in our society whose foundation as a democracy is based on intensive social dialogue. Nothing yet has proven to work better than the ability to negotiate and reach consensus.  Read full media statement»

Controversial E-tolling Bill: Department of Transport response to submissions

 

E-tollingThe Transport Department's response to public submissions on the E-tolling Bill can be perused at the following link: Dept Response to submissions on E-tolling Bill. The National Assembly took a decision last week to refer the E-tolling Bill back to the Transport Portfolio Committee. The National Assembly had been scheduled to approve the Bill, but there's been a proposal to extend the scope of the Bill. Members will be updated on any further developments regarding the above mentioned as the Bill is also being challenged in court.

*    Several areas in the region are starting the season with below-average vegetation conditions.
*    Forecasts call for below-normal rains in several of the areas affected by last season's drought.
