July 2015
Dear Colleague,

It's already getting hot around here - especially at the State House! The team at USGBC MA has been working very hard to push our agenda so that the policies underlying our real estate market are set to improve our communities. We have been working on enhancing the building code, improving financing mechanisms for renewables and retrofits, and advocating for better green building education throughout the State. We are also working with municipalities to incentivize green buildings as a means of stimulating local economies. There's a lot more to be done, but because of our awesome volunteers, we are front and center on the stage pushing for more green buildings.

Thank you for connecting with us and for using our template letters to contact your legislators on our advocacy issues. Thank you to the extra awesome people who have shown up at Beacon Hill to demonstrate the importance and argue eloquently for the merits of green buildings for sustainable communities. It has been a great month in our work. Special thanks to our staff: Celis Brisbin, Peter Ciurczak and our advocacy fellow, Cherie Ching for leading the charge. More on the advocacy work below.

I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event - perhaps our Fun in the Sun Summer Social. Perhaps Boston GreenFest

Maybe you can make it to our upcoming Green Breakfast Club focused on our advocacy agenda - think of it as net metering with coffee!

We are the place to connect with your peers in green building. We have the networking events, the educational programming and the advocacy opportunities where you can really find your community. Thank you for being a part of our essential efforts to transform our communities toward sustainability.

I look forward to seeing you soon,
Grey

Fun in the Sun Summer Social!Recap
Coming up in two weeks, our Summer Social will be in Cambridge!

Join us 7/22 from 6-8pm at North Point Park, near the Museum of Science and Lechmere Station. This is a great way to introduce new members to our organization - bring a friend or a work colleague!

Sign up here!

Last year, you can see we had a fun time in the Seaport.

This year, we'll be celebrating all things SUN (and photovoltaic) related. Our advocacy committee will be on hand to answer your questions about the latest net metering reform legislation working its way through the State House.  The evening will feature fabulous food by Sweet Cheeks Q, games and socializing for all.  We'll also hear from our generous sponsor for this event, Zapotec Energy.

Thank you to our Emerging Professionals group - EPMA - for organizing this event!

Chapter Event RecapRecap
We've been working hard to help more people know about us over the last few weeks:

  • On June 30th, we were back at the State House for an Energy Efficiency Hearing of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities & Energy

Together with our allies and members, USGBC MA has successfully advocated on behalf of PACE (S.1774), energy efficiency education (H.2857) and home energy assessment (S.1761) and net-zero energy bills (S.1771). As always, bookmark the blog for more information about each of these events.

Committee Recap

Our work to meet our mission of green buildings for all within a generation depends on a massive cadre of dedicated volunteers organizing to make a difference.

First up, we have to give a big thanks to the Advocacy Committee. Working with our Advocacy Fellow, Cherie Ching, the Advocacy Committee helped put together many of the events noted in the recap above.

The Events Committee has been working tirelessly on our annual Green Building Project Showcase, and have recently finalized the awards structure for the competition. They are currently planning the final details, and expect to have media and more information available soon.

Our Outreach Committee has been active as well. The group will be hosting a USGBC MA table at the Boston GreenFest, August 21-23. They're also working to connect people to USGBC MA as members. We know you want to help out - so get in touch with us, here!

Finally, our Residential Green Building Committee has been pretty busy on the web. Not only have they started their own LinkedIn group and Twitter handle, they've also lined up speakers and events for the next five months. One such speaker is Galen Nelson, Director of Market Development at MassCEC, while a tour of Fraunhofer is also on order.

Our committees are where we really get down to business. You can read more about the various ways you can roll up your sleeves and help here.

How many green buildings are in this picture?

...and where was this shot taken from?
