[Boston] Webinar - Cultivating Young Minds:
A Net Zero School for Tomorrows Leaders

Through a series of interviews with the school faculty and the design team, we explore the creation of a net-zero-energy building that complements the children's studies of the balance of nature.

A new Music and Science complex was added to the Hood River Middle School in 2010, earning LEED Platinum certification. Through a series of interviews with the school faculty and the design team, we explore the creation of a net-zero-energy building that complements the children's studies of the balance of nature. Course participants will learn how the project achieved the 'School as a Teaching Tool' credit with one of the most robust sustainable curricula in the world and how the school extended its sustainable education to the community, earning the project another innovation credit for 'Green Building Education'. This webinar is approved for 1 LEED Specific CE ( BD+C) credit and 1 AIA/CES LU/HSW hour.

Session Learning Objectives:

  • List the requirements for the School as a Teaching Tool credit in LEED for Schools, and describe how the Hood River Middle School integrated them through hands-on learning
  • Describe the Innovation in Design Green Building Education credit that the Hood River Middle School, and differentiate it from the School as a Teaching Tool credit
  • Relate the synergies amongst the education and participation of the students (ID c3) with Optimizing Energy Performance (EAc1) and On-Site Renewable Energy (EAc2)
  • Explain strategies used in the project for water efficiency, reduction of material use and enhancing the indoor environment
When:
June 17, 2015, 4:30 - 6pm
Where:
USGBC MA Chapter Offices: 50 Milk Street, 17th Floor Hercules Conference Room.

Get ready for the Green Apple Day of Service

The Green Schools Committee and USGBC MA Chapter will again participate in the Green Apple Day of Service to advance healthy, sustainable schools in 2015!

Are you interested in supporting this exciting project? We are going to see over 75 projects in the Commonwealth this year and need a big team to help coordinate all the volunteers and support the mini-grant program. Projects will occur throughout the fall at schools, with the main event intended for Saturday, September 27th.

Examples of service projects include indoor or outdoor clean ups, preparing a garden, creating signage that helps to reduce waste, or any other project that promotes healthy schools and community service. If you are interested in helping out, please email our Programs Manager, Celis Brisbin, at celis@usgbcma.org

Meetings

Tuesday, June 23, 5 - 7pm

Join us to discuss and plan the 2015 Green Building Showcase in October. We are working on the Chapter's premier fall event to showcase and celebrate exceptional green buildings built by our community or practitioners over the past year.

The showcase will feature informational displays about completed green buildings, as well as present the Innovation in Green Design Award winner and recognize the Green Building of the Year.

This is a call for volunteers to help in the planning process for the event - helping to iron out the details of what the event will include, organize the awards program, as well as the logistics of how we'll make it happen. If you can't attend the meeting but are still interested in planning, email Tiffany King at tking@commodorebuilders.com.
