Green Economy -- Tranforming Society, Industry and Economy
by Barbra Batshalom, Tthe Green Roundtable
Those of you who are reading this article have likely been part of the sustainability movement for some time. For us, the concept of a "green economy" is not a new one, and the (almost) sudden reality of national dialogue based on that framework is as radical as it is inspiring.

Event Highlights
Modeling Workshop a Success, Sold Out Green Careers Networking Night
On April 23rd, Chris Schaffner (The Green Engineer) delivered the USGBC's "Using Energy Modeling on LEED Projects" workshop to two dozen architects, engineers, contractors and others. Participants came away with a better understanding of how to use energy modeling as a design tool in the integrated design process and LEED certification process. Learn more here. GRT will host a "How to use eQuest" training in June and the USGBC workshop again this fall. Email Aaron to express your interest and reserve a spot in these trainings.
Later that night, GRT and EBC's Young Environmental Professionals (YEPs) hosted the "Green Careers Networking Night" for 85 career changers, job seekers and recruiters to learn about LEED, LEED Accreditation and opportunities in the green building field. Becky Owens (VHB) and Meredith Elbaum (Sasaki) spoke to their experience as LEED AP's, LEED project experience and sustainability initiatives they've led in their firms. GRT staff also gave tours of NEXUS all night. |

Advocacy Alerts The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
By Michael R. Davis, Bergmeyer Associates, Inc. and Patricia Burke, The Green Roundtable
Our mission, to transform the design and construction industry by mainstreaming green building and sustainable design, is inextricably connected to the economics of building. Since the founding of The Green Roundtable in 1998, our effectiveness in this transformation has been aided by a generally strong real estate market. Similarly, important recent policy shifts from our municipal and state governments towards more stringent regulation on building energy use and sustainable design planning principles have, too, been bolstered by a sense that real change is possible and, in fact, desired.

USGBC NewsThe Future of Green Jobs
By Carrie Havey, Emerging Green Builders
USGBC- While the government is working to rebuild our economy through the economic recovery package, the USGBC is focused on supporting the implementation of the federal investment in green and energy efficient building. The building industry makes up 14.7% of the U.S. GDP and uses 40% of our nation's energy. Greening the country's existing buildings would result in an estimated saving of $160 billion in energy costs while creating green jobs. This could be a great boost in our economy.

GRT HIRES EXHIBIT DESIGNER FOR INTEGRATED EXHIBITS
Eliana Strauss, who earned her degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute, works with NEXUS exhibit sponsors to design and develop integrated educational exhibits. She most recently worked at Rebuilding Together Oakland as a marketer and fundraiser for residential and nonprofit rebuilding projects. Prior to that, Eliana worked at Amaze Design, Inc. designing interactive and interpretive exhibits for museums, zoos and visitor centers.
