Welcome to Our Newest 2U Members!
|
Dorothy Miller joined 2U in August. She grew up on Chicago's Southwest side and was a full-time mom to her three sons. When her husband died, she worked as a bookkeeper. After remarrying, Dorothy and her second husband left Chicago's cold winters for Rio Rancho, New Mexico, living there for nearly 30 years. She discovered Unitarian Universalism in New Mexico and was an active member of the Rio Rancho Westside UU Congregation. After her second husband died, Dorothy returned to Chicago to be closer to her two surviving sons. Dorothy likes listening to jazz, especially songs by Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. While Dorothy lives in Lakeview, she is a life-long White Sox fan. Dorothy enjoys walking with her niece and getting reintroduced to Chicago.
Welcome, Dorothy!

2014-15 Small Group Ministry |
Small Group Ministry is a wonderful way for all members of the 2U community - both newcomers and long-term members - to connect with one another. In twice-monthly sessions, participants learn about themselves and Unitarian Universalism while building relationships with a variety of people. These groups work best when participants make a commitment to one another to make attendance a priority. When you're not there, you're missed!
Small Groups for the 2014-15 church year are forming now! Registration forms are available on the Welcome Table in the Palmer Room. To register, please rank the options from 1 to 3 in order of preference; we will strive to put you in your first- or second-choice group if at all possible. All groups plan to meet at 2U.
- 1st and 3rd Sundays at 12pm with Hugh Visor
- 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 7pm with Adelaide Meyers
- 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 9am with Will Kunz
Groups will begin meeting in late October. Questions? Contact Rev. Adam!

2U Building & Grounds News: B&G Gets "BIG" |
2U members have long contributed in quiet ways to strengthening the congregation. We're not exactly a sneaky bunch, but we do have among us those who go about making their gifts to the church in less public ways. This is certainly true of those who care for our building and grounds. Most of us spend not much more than 90 minutes at church over the course of the week and we don't notice much about the church or the yard unless it's something awful or magnificent--and even then, it's pretty easy to put it out of mind as we depart. But it is a place where some folks spend a lot of time (namely, our dedicated staff) and it's a sacred place, a spot where we worship on Sunday and other days, where people marry, where memorial services are offered, where we gather to help make sense of the world and give thanks for what we have. Our building and grounds also reflect our congregation and our denomination; we want to be as lovely and welcoming with our space as we are ourselves. And to be good neighbors.
The 2U Board of Trustees will pay more attention to the building and grounds this church year and aims to raise everyone's awareness of the need for collective care of the space, including increased funding in the years ahead. A couple of long term members, Lew H. and Steve H., have distinguished themselves as the most attentive stewards of our building and grounds. We thank them for devoting their considerable expertise and time to caring for 2U. Let's each find a way to support their efforts--by contributing financially to special building projects when asked, by fulfilling our annual pledges of financial support to the church, by volunteering for building and grounds work days, and by thinking about the church as we might think about our own homes.
Lew writes, "We have been short of money, and to our church "house," that means we have been neglectful. The amount of money set aside for repairs is not adequate for what needs to be done. We need to get proactive about this by building a substantial fund that is dedicated to maintaining the building."
The 2U board of trustees would like to extend a special thanks to Jen Duston, our office administrator, for all of her help managing the space and to Tyler D. for serving as the chair of the Building and Grounds Committee (now called the "BIG Committee" because we've added "infrastructure" to the list and because the committee now sounds especially impressive). Thanks, too, to the intrepid gardeners who've worked diligently this fall to beautify the front yard.
Please contact 2U Board of Trustees Past-Chair Monica Drane if you have questions or would like more information about the new BIG Committee and how you might help.

Samhain Celebration
|
Friday, October 31, 2014
7:00pm
Covenant of Earth and Sky (2U's CUUPS Chapter) welcomes all to come join us for Samhain on Friday, October 31st at 7pm in the 2U sanctuary.
This holiday celebrates the Earth Mother as Crone. The earth enters the Third Harvest, a time of honoring the dark; the veil between the worlds of the living and dead is thinnest. In this spirit, we honor the Ancestors; those who came before us and have taught us lessons of life and love. We invite all to join us and bring a memento of your ancestor (photo, jewelry or other token) to place on teh altar at this time of year in their memory.
Please bring a dish to share afterward.
Contact Shauna with any questions. Blessed Be!

Classes From the Pastoral Care Team This Fall
|
The Pastoral Care Team at 2U is hosting a series of classes throughout fall 2014 and spring 2015 to provide information about approaches to planning for many aspects of the end of life. Thank you to those of you who have joined us for our 2 sessions so far! Our next session will be:
- "Communication Essentials to Address your Changing Needs": Sunday, November 2, 1:00-2:30pm in the Palmer Room. Eldercare Coach Susan Hayward will join us (again!) to highlight communication strategies related to difficult conversations related to end of life decision making and the types of outcomes that can come from these conversations. Susan will also talk about advocacy skills when working with professionals and other family members. (Even if you have not attended either of the first two sessions, it's perfectly fine to come to this one!)
To help cover costs of guest speakers, we request each attendee to donate a one-time amount of $10, no matter if you attend one class or all of them. You can bring cash or check (made out to Bonnie Ewald) on the day of the event. The series is open to everyone, regardless of age, spot in the "planning" process, or being a 2U member or not. More sessions are to come starting in January 2015, digging deeper on topics that include legal considerations, healthcare decisions, financial planning, and spirituality.

Choir Corner |
Studies show that singing in autumn clears our sinuses, fends off flu, and cleans all the dead leaves out of the gutters. The 2U choir rehearses in the sanctuary on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 to 8:30. All voices are welcome! For more information, contact music director Marianne Parker, or just come to a rehearsal.
