From the Minister
|
If you have been in Chicago this past week, you've noticed the powerful storms that have blown through! They've flooded streets and soaked the ground, produced some wonderful displays of lightning...and flooded our basement once again last night! This is the second time in the four years I've been at 2U that our sump pumps haven't been able to keep up with the storms. Fortunately, a small team of staff and volunteers were able to manage the mopping up (thank you, Jen, Raquel, Jonah, Sofia, and Lew!) and arrange for a cleaning service to dry, sanitize, and clean the carpets. This means a few things:
-
Children's classes for Sunday are cancelled. Instead, we would love to have the help of volunteers to reassemble the rooms.
-
We're going to have to do some planning in Building and Grounds about what we can do to guard against this kind of event in the future.
-
We need to develop a list of folks who are willing and able to be emergency volunteers if/when we have these sorts of events. With luck, they won't happen even every two years!
But this brings up a question for me: how often did this happen before I arrived? Is this an effect of climate change in our classrooms and offices? We know that weather patterns have shifted in recent decades and that we've experienced more powerful storms instead of regular gentle ones. On July 13th, I'll be preaching on climate change and our faith - please join us as we consider in worship what we are called to do in response to what is happening in our world.
Faithfully,
Rev. Adam

2U LGBTQ Pride
|
Thanks to everyone who joined 2U in Standing on the Side of Love in this year's Pride events! A special thank-you to Ashley Boyd, who coordinated the marchers in the parade, and Libby Harvey-Hill and Sue Dunmore, who headed up the lemonade stand. We had about twenty marchers in the Chicago Area UU Church group, and the lemonade stand raised $300 for the Lifespan Faith Development program!
Thanks, too, to Rev. Rudra Dundzila for his inspiring sermon that truly celebrated 2U's long and tireless involvement in the fight for marriage equality.
Ready to keep the energy going? Make calls for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act! Support LGBTQ workplace protections by joining Americans for Workplace Opportunity at phone banks through the month of July. Phone banks will be taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:30pm at Lambda Legal (105 W. Adams, 26th floor), and on Saturdays from 10:30am-2pm at the Center on Halsted (3656 N. Halsted). For more information, contact Logan Clark.

Worship in the Park
|
July 20, 2014
11:00am
Please join us on Sunday, July 20 at 11am for our annual Worship in Lincoln Park, right on Lake Michigan. We will meet in Grove 15, just south of the Waveland Clock Tower. Click here for the map.
There will be a church-wide potluck meal right after the service. Please bring your favorite dish or beverage to share! If you're bringing drinks, iced tea, lemonade, or water are preferred-- we had lots of leftover soda last year.
We still need volunteers! Please sign up in the Palmer Room if you are able to help out with any of the following:
- Set-up or clean-up
- Bring paper plates, cups, plasticware, or tablecloths
- Bring tables and extra chairs
- Provide rides from 2U to the park
Please also let us know if you need a ride to the park!
We'll try to have a few extra chairs available, but please bring your own if possible, or a blanket to spread in the grass.
Looking forward to a lovely Sunday in the park! Hope to see you there!

To my fellow seekers at 2U, the Board of Trustees, Rev. Adam, and the leadership,
I am writing to say thank you for affirming my ministry and by voting to ordain me into the Unitarian Universalist ministry this November. There have been numerous opportunities for me to learn and grow and deepen my understanding of this demanding, confusing, and ultimately authentic vocation. I am humbled and grateful for your continued support, love and even patience with me through a long and sometime serpentine road to religious leadership. Having this congregation walk with me through all of it has been a wonderful gift and a sustaining point of solid ground. I look forward to working with you to create an event which holds up the tradition of our faith that any ministry stems from community, is formed in the crucible of relationships and is affirmed and authorized by a covenanted community.
I am also excited to tell you that my partner, Pam, and I will be moving back to Chicago in August. (We found a house -- yay!) Pam will be serving our congregation in Hinsdale, IL and I will be serving at Beverly Unitarian. We are overjoyed to be returning home to share with you in the broader community of progressive religious life in Chicago.
Peace and all good things to each of you and to the wonder-filled and sustaining community which is Second Unitarian in Chicago.
Karen

Thank-You from the Accessories Sale Committee
|
The June 14 and 15 Accessory Sale brought in just over $300. Thank you 2U! The Committee (Berlinda Browne, Jodi Cerny, and Jill Althage) especially want to thank all of you who donated goods, made purchases, and offered encouragement. Besides bringing some more monetary support to 2U, we were happy to meet our neighbors. Some of them asked us about our church and expressed interest in trying out a service soon.

News From COVES
|
COVES (Covenant of Earth and Sky), 2U's CUUPS Chapter, had a wonderful Summer Solstice service on June 21st. We had about 17 people join us for welcoming in the Sun King and Earth Mother on the first day of summer. As we welcomed in the directions, the Sky greeted us with resounding thunder and a rainstorm. We welcomed in the growing season and summer light with music, chants and a craft activity afterwards. We put together spirit bags with a variety of herbs. Thanks to all who participated!
Please join us for our celebration of Lammas, the First Harvest, on Friday, August 1st at 7:00pm.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact Shauna, and make sure to check out our Facebook page!

Welcome to Our Newest 2U Members
|
Jennifer Graham grew up in Park Forest, IL. She attended Eastern Illinois University for a time and later DePaul University for both her bachelor's and master's degrees in writing. She and her husband, Robert Slawson run a corporate recruiting and consulting firm. They have two adult children who live in the Chicago area. The family previously attended the Hinsdale UU Church, where Jennifer was active in the children's religious education program. Jennifer and Robert moved into Chicago in 2007 and enjoy the "instant warmth" they found at 2U. Jennifer may be interested in assisting with 2U's R.E. program.
Robert Slawson was born in Chicago, but grew up in different states including Ohio and Wisconsin. He studied political science at Marquette University and eventually moved to Chicago. He enjoys sailing, traveling, sports in general and in particular, English soccer (football). Since moving back into the city, Robert and Jennifer are enjoying the urban culture of Chicago. They have been attending 2U off and on for two years and feel good to have made a solid connection with the church. Robert has already assisted with the Night Ministry.
David Walle hails from Novi, MI, just west of Detroit. He studied English and finance at Vanderbilt University. After working in various positions at Borders Group, David went back to graduate school in journalism at the University of Missouri where he met his wife Robin Hoecker. He works for a company focusing on investment newsletters and money management. He enjoys photography, running, and is a sports fan-- especially rooting for Michigan. David and Robin attended several churches searching for the right fit and we're glad they chose 2U.
Robin Hoecker is originally from Pittsburgh. She studied international development and French at Penn State and then lived and worked in Washington D.C. and Germany on two state department exchanges, one being a young professionals exchange and the other a Fulbright scholarship. Robin returned to school studying journalism at the University of Missouri. She is in a PhD program in communications at Northwestern University with just her dissertation to finish. Robin enjoys cycling--especially long distance trips. Robin and David are expecting their first child, a baby girl, in mid-August. At 2U she may be interested in joining a small group or becoming involved with social justice issues.
Amanda Barker grew up in Canton, MA, near Boston. She studied theater and political science at The College of Wooster. There, she met her roommate, Alex Paolino-Gibson, who was also a theater major. They moved to Chicago in 2010. Amanda often walked by 2U on her way to her first job here at the Timeline Theater. She works as an account and project manager for Groupons "Group Getaways". In her free time, Amanda enjoys going to the gym and keeping up with her friends. She enjoyed attending the Seder at 2U and is interested in joining a small group and volunteering with the Night Ministry. Amanda feels comfortable at 2U and that it is the best "fit" for her.
A warm welcome to Jennifer, Robert, David, Robin, and Amanda!
