From the Minister

May has been very good month. What a wonderful way to wrap up the church year and enter the summer!
Our sanctuary windows are repaired and back in place. Our canvass was extraordinarily successful - with pledges of over $30,000 more made for 2013-2014 than budgeted for 2012-2013. Three 2U couples were married or renewed their vows.
Now we're about to celebrate the start of summer with our Annual Flower Communion and Ingathering of new members on June 2 and begin our summer services with the Music Sunday service on June 9. Summertime at 2U is just a little bit slower than the rest of the church year; all of us want to enjoy these warm and sunny days! That said, you can look forward to a variety of voices in the pulpit, our yearly lakeside church picnic, and the Roots and Shoots fundraiser, too. We'll also be spending the summer preparing for next year, including bringing a new Director of Faith Development on staff.
I look forward to seeing you in worship this summer!
Faithfully,
Rev. Adam

Help Wanted: Director of Faith Development
|
Dear 2U Members and Friends,
With Kellie's departure for seminary later this summer, we're searching once again for a Director of Faith Development. The posting is below. Please pass it along to anyone you think might be right for this position and our congregation!
Faithfully,
Rev. Adam
Director of Faith Development
Second Unitarian Church (656 W. Barry, Chicago IL) is seeking a half-time Director of Faith Development (DFD) whose primary area of responsibility will be programming for children and youth, including Sunday morning classes and beyond. We seek a person who is interested in both the overarching vision of the ministry of religious education and faith development within the congregation and also the week-to-week management of classrooms, curricula, and volunteers. Strong communications (interpersonal, written, and technological) and administrative skills are essential in this position, as are a minimum of 2-3 years personal and/or professional experience with education/religious education and demonstrated experience with/commitment to the Unitarian Universalist religious life.
Second Unitarian Church is a congregation with a deeply committed faith development volunteer base, a large (and growing) community of young families and children, and a commitment to the growth and health of the program. Our DFD will work closely with the Minister (who is also the position's supervisor) and the Lifespan Faith Development Council in planning curricula, intergenerational worship, and family rites of passage. We see faith development as an integral part of the ministry of the church, and want our DFD to be a partner in that ministry.
This is a salaried half-time position with benefits in line with UUA compensation guidelines. The hours are generally flexible with the exception of Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoon office hours which will be set in conversation with the Minister.
Queries, cover letters, and resumes can be sent to the Rev. Adam Robersmith at [email protected].

Hungry, Not Hopeless Dinner & Movie Night
|
Please join us TONIGHT for the Hungry, Not Hopeless Dinner and Movie Night, hosted by the Second Unitarian Roots & Shoots group.
When: Saturday, June 1 at 5:00pm
Where: Second Unitarian Church, 656 W. Barry Ave., Chicago, IL 60657
Join us for a chili and corn bread dinner, complete with dessert, followed by a screening of the movie Where God Left His Shoes.
The movie follows one family through their struggle with homelessness. Where God Left His Shoes is not rated, and though it does have some strong language, it also gives a realistic portrayal of life without a home and a family hit hard by poverty.
Suggested donation for dinner and movie is $15. All proceeds will go to 2U's Night Ministry Outreach, and will help to feed the hungry in our community. Childcare and games will be provided for kids too young for the movie.
RSVP here, or call (773) 252-7658.
We hope to see you there!

Spring/Summer Orientation
|
Sundays, June 2, June 9, June 16, 2013
12:00-2:00pm
Calling all visitors-- who want to become members!
The 2U spring/summer orientation will be held Sunday, June 2; Sunday, June 9; and Sunday, June 16 following services. Sessions are scheduled to begin at noon in the 2U library and will end at 2 pm or before.
If you are interested in attending and have not already signed up on the Welcome Table in the Palmer Room, please reserve your place with Jen Duston, church office administrator; you can contact her via email, or by phone at (773) 549-0260 ext. 10.
Child care will be available for those who request it in advance.
While attending any one of these three orientations will meet the by-law requirement for membership, attending all three will provide a greater breadth and depth of understanding for the theological roots of our community, ways to engage with the 2U community, how 2U is organized, and what membership really means.
If you have questions about attending, please email membership committee chair John Broome.

From the Lifespan Faith Development Council
|
2U's Faith Development classes welcome summer! During the summer, we offer all-ages classes for our Spirit Play and Explorers participants on Sunday morning. For the little ones, child care for infants and toddlers under 3 will remain available in our Green Caterpillar room.
We're starting with a lead-up to the annual GLBT Pride Parade Lemonade stand. We'll spend the month of June learning about the parade and why it's important in our community, preparing for the lemonade stand by asking for donations and help, and creating signs and decorations that we will use on Pride Sunday for the lemonade stand. All hands on deck to make this year's lemonade stand our best ever!

Caregivers' Drop-In Support Group
|
Wednesday, June 12, 2013
7:00-8:30pm
It's estimated that one in four Americans are unpaid family caregivers. "Caregiving" ranges from full-time, hands-on care to a weekly long-distance phone call. Whatever the level of care, caregiving is a unique mix of love and worry that sits in the heart. It takes a toll: studies show that caregivers have more physical, emotional, family, and financial issues than the rest of the population. We need support!
The first meeting of the Caregivers' Drop-in Support Group at 2U will be on Wednesday, June 12 from 7:00 to 8:30pm. The monthly meetings will be on the second Wednesday of every month. If you come once to try it out, are you stuck forever? No! If you can't make it every month but would like to come when you can, is that okay? Yes!
For more information, please email me, Myra Epping, or call me at (773) 338-4086. If you plan to attend the June 12 meeting, please sign up at the Welcome Table in the Palmer Room. BUT - if you decide at the last minute to come on June 12 and you didn't sign the sign-up sheet, that's okay, too.

Summer Solstice Celebration
|
12:00pm

The ritual will take place in the back garden, weather permitting. Please bring your sun hat, bug spray (if necessary) and families to our celebration.
We hope to see you there!
