The purpose of the meeting is to:

  • Provide a review of 2012-13 financial status and accomplishments

Sun/Moon Group Beltane Celebration

On May 1, the Sun/Moon Group celebrated Beltane, or May Day. We had a great celebration of the Lord and Lady of the Greenwood with music, planting seeds and a Maypole. We hope to see even more people at our upcoming celebrations, the next one being Summer Solstice in June.

Ribbons, Not Walls Fabric Arts Project
Mango St Quilt
The Ribbons, Not Walls fabric arts project for Immigrant Rights is headed for Louisville and General Assembly in just a few weeks. 2U is contributing two panels to the project; one of these beautiful works in progress is pictured here. Over 24 panels will be put on display, and a library of some 150 Banned Books by Hispanic authors will be presented to a community organization in that city.

You can support this important Social Justice work by sponsoring a book or panel for a donation of just $20. Smaller donations are also very welcome.

Kellie Kelly will run an information and donation table at coffee hour on Sunday, June 2 to answer your questions and solicit your support.

Full details are available at ribbonsnotwalls.org, or on Facebook.

Sponsored by HUUmanists.
Plate-Sharing Applications
We are soliciting applications for July-September 2013 at this time.  If you are involved in a social justice organization and are interested in presenting for each Sunday in one of these months, please secure an application here, or you can request a copy from Jen Duston in the church office.

The fundamental criterion is that the activity should match one of our UU principles.  Electronic applications are preferred. Applications should be submitted to the office by Sunday, May 19th.  In-person presentations to the Social Justice Council will then take place on Sunday,  June 2nd.   Applicants will have 20 minutes at that time: ten minutes for presenting and ten minutes for Q&A.

Questions? Please email Norm Groetzinger.

Caregivers' Drop-In Support Group
Wednesday, June 12, 2013 helping hands
7:00-8:30pm

It's estimated that one in four Americans are unpaid family caregivers. "Caregiving" ranges from full-time, hands-on care to a weekly long-distance phone call. Whatever the level of care, caregiving is a unique mix of love and worry that sits in the heart. It takes a toll: studies show that caregivers have more physical, emotional, family, and financial issues than the rest of the population. We need support!

The first meeting of the Caregivers' Drop-in Support Group at 2U will be on Wednesday, June 12 from 7:00 to 8:30pm. The monthly meetings will be on the second Wednesday of every month. If you come once to try it out, are you stuck forever? No! If you can't make it every month but would like to come when you can, is that okay? Yes!

For more information, please email me, Myra Epping, or call me at (773) 338-4086. If you plan to attend the June 12 meeting, please sign up at the Welcome Table in the Palmer Room. BUT - if you decide at the last minute to come on June 12 and you didn't sign the sign-up sheet, that's okay, too.
Choir Corner
musical chalice
The 2U choir will sing its last song of the 2012-13 church year at the music service on Sunday, June 9th. But never fear! You can still join the choir when rehearsals resume in the fall! For more information, contact music director Marianne Parker.
Director of Membership Position at Third Unitarian

Third Unitarian Church, a voice for liberal religion and progressive action on Chicago's West Side since 1868, seeks a dynamic, inspired UU leader to assume its Director of Membership position. This search will begin immediately and will conclude as soon as the appropriate candidate has been selected.  The position will start on August 19, 2013.  Since the position's inception at Third in Fall 2008, the Director of Membership (DOM) has assumed a key role in all aspects of member and friend integration into the spiritual life of this 100-member congregation.  The DOM does this chiefly by highlighting opportunities for prophetic and pastoral lay ministries to others within and beyond our walls, and by providing critical program support for our Sunday morning activities.

The Director of Membership will:

  • Be responsible for designing and implementing processes for managing visitors to Third Church;
  • Be responsible for designing and implementing processes for attracting returning guests to participate in the membership exploratory course, i.e., "Trails to TUC";
  • Be responsible for designing and implementing processes for integrating new members into congregational activities, in consultation with the Minister, the Committee on Programs and Ministries, and the Membership Committee;
  • Report directly to the Minister, who will serve as the Director of Membership's supervisor;
  • Coordinate activities with the Public Relations Committee and other committees as required to maximize the effectiveness of the overall congregational goal of membership growth;
  • Act as a primary greeter of visitors for regularly scheduled Sunday services;
  • Attend meetings of the Membership Committee on an as needed basis, with the intent of providing consultation on congregational programs sponsored by that committee;
  • Participate in annual pledge drives, including oversight and maintenance of the congregational on-line pledging database;
  • Provide recommendations for planning in any aspect of congregational programming consistent with Third Church's mission statement and budgetary boundaries.

This is a part-time (12 hour per week) position whose employment calendar is concurrent with the typical church "year" of activities, e.g., mid-August to late June.  The current total salary ($9720) and benefits ($630) package is $10,350.  The successful candidate will embody a deep commitment to our faith tradition and its growth by extensive previous involvement in congregational and denominational life, and will be recommended by both minister and lay leaders alike.  A documented ability to work collaboratively in a multi-staff setting while understanding and respecting lines of authority is also required.  Previous experience in non-profit management is preferred.  We are a great place to work and are seeking to increase the diversity of our staff. Please send inquiries, referrals, or a C.V. and cover letter with a list of references to the Reverend Brian Covell.

Third Unitarian Church is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  For more information on TUC, visit us online at thirdunitarianchurch.org.
