2U Community Potluck Seder
Seder Plate 1 Wednesday, March 27
6:00pm

Help us make the 2U Seder a success! Please sign up right now to attend and bring something or lend a hand to make our annual community Seder happen!

This cherished 2U event observes the Jewish tradition of coming together as a community to retell the biblical story of the exodus from Egypt. Passover calls all who share the Seder meal to consider that they themselves have been liberated, and recommits us to work for the freedom of all who are still oppressed.

There are lots of to-dos and to-brings for all levels of time, talent, and treasure-- please help us make the 2U Seder happen again in 2013.
Welcome to our Newest 2U Members

Stephanie Bens grew up in Ann Arbor, MI. She studied English at Alma College in Michigan and moved to Chicago where she soon found work as an English tutor at Malcolm X College. She was promoted to part-time director of the Academic Support Center there. Stephanie enjoys reading, visiting the zoo, and swimming in Lake Michigan in the summer. She found 2U through David Dyer. With her background in singing, she may join the choir, enjoys the Young Adult Group, and may join the Social Justice Council.

Amber Mack hails from Glen Ellyn, Il. She attended several colleges and graduated from Columbia College with a degree in theatre directing. Amber also received an AA in Applied Science in Health Information Technology from the College of DuPage County and works as a medical records coder. She enjoys crocheting, board games, and singing in the 2U choir. Amber and her fianc, Nathan Mooney, plan on marrying at 2U next year. They have volunteered for the Night Ministry and may join the social justice and/or hospitality committees. They are glad to be so warmly welcomed at 2U.

Ross Adams grew up in Geneva, Il and attended the Unitarian Church there where he first met Rev.Adam Robersmith. After attending Purdue University where he earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Ross moved back to Il. and found 2U where he discovered Adam again! Ross works for Grainger as a sustainability analyst-working to make the company environmentally sound. He enjoys reading, cooking, and endurance sports (hopes to be in the Chicago marathon this year). At 2U, Ross enjoys the Young Adult Group and is in the Social Justice Book Club. Ross may be interested in assisting with the Green Sanctuary Committee.

Kathy Rosa grew up in Johnston City, near Carbondale, Il. Along the way, she lived in Texas, Ohio, and London. Kathy earned her master's in library science from the University of Kentucky and her doctorate in education from the University of Houston. She works as the Director of Research and Statistics at the American Library Association. Kathy enjoys reading, computers, and visiting with her family. Previously she attended the Beverly Unitarian Church and when she moved to Lakeview, she found 2U. Kathy may be interested in joining the hospitality team and /or helping out in the library.

Ariel Wynne grew up in Holbrook, Long Island where she attended the Stonybrook UU Church. She graduated from the University of Buffalo where she studied exercise science. Ariel works for a tech company, volunteers at the Rehab Institute and plans on returning to school in physical therapy. She enjoys reading and running. Ariel is active with the Young Adult Group and is interested in volunteering with the Night Ministry.

Daniel Lewis hails from southeastern Oklahoma. He moved to Chicago in 1975 to attend college, starting at Moody Bible Institute, continuing with Trinity College in Deerfield, where he studied biblical studies, and finishing up at the University of Chicago Divinity School where he earned his master's degree and worked on his doctorate. Daniel builds web sites for associations and other non-profit organizations and is looking for new challenges. In his free time, Daniel is a passionate photographer. Last summer, Dan was looking for a church community and decided to try out 2U. The night before, he had his first date with 2U member Rosalind Hurwitz. When he mentioned he was going to 2U the next day, she said "well, you'll see me singing in the 2U choir!" Dan and Rosalind were recently engaged and we are happy for them. Dan is in a small group and this spring will co-teach with Adam Robersmith "Making Peace with your Religious Past".

Joyce Hecht was born in New Orleans, but grew up on the far south side of Chicago. She attended Northern Illinois University, where she earned a degree in education, and National Louis University, earning a master's degree in reading. Moving to the north side, Joyce taught school, worked for a publishing house, and then returned to education. She worked with different grade levels and in many roles, retiring in 2005. Joyce enjoys reading, movies, running, is a docent at the Field Museum, belongs to the League of Women Voters, and still has time to see her daughter and grandchild. Joyce has been attending 2U for two years and we are glad she decided to join. She may be interested in volunteering with the children's education program.

A warm welcome to Stephanie, Amber, Ross, Kathy, Ariel, Daniel, and Joyce!!
Building & Grounds Work Party
Sunday, March 17, 2013  Toolbox
12:00pm

Space in the Utility Closet: The Final Frontier!

How are you at organizing things? On March 17th at 12:00, Building & Grounds will have a work party to reorganize the big downstairs utility closet. Lots of important stuff is stored down there. (Light bulbs, tools etc.) Can we make things easier to find? If you have ideas about organizing the closet, or if you'd just like to pitch in and help move stuff around, please contact Don MacGregor at (773) 517-7334.
From the Young Adult Group
On March 17, the Young Adult Group will have their monthly brunch following services, and on March 24, they will have circle worship following services. For more details on these events and the group in general, please email Erin Rusmi and David Dyer at [email protected].
Young Adults Host April Night Ministry Outreach
Chicago Chalice Connection, a network of UU young adults around Chicago, is volunteering for April's Night Ministry Outreach on Tuesday April 2nd. All young adults (18 - 35) are invited to join us as we prepare food from 5:00pm- 8:00pm at Second Unitarian and/or as we serve food from 8:00pm-10:30pm a few blocks away.

We need a count on how many people are coming so please RSVP to [email protected].
Social Justice Training
Saturdays, March 23 & April 13, 2013
9:00am-12:00pm
Second Unitarian Church, 656 W. Barry

Join us for a two-party social justice training. The training will be put on by Community Renewal Society (CRS), a progressive, faith-based organization that works to eliminate race and class barriers. The training will include:

The differences between charity and justice
What is power and how do you engage it?
Taking action for justice within your faith community
How do you structure teams to make meaningful change?

Please email Megan Selby with questions or to RSVP, or sign up on the Welcome Table.

On Tuesday, April 16th we hope to send 10 2U-ers to Springfield as part of a 400 person delegation with CRS, lobbying for systemic changes for greater racial and economic justice. All are welcome, and interested parties are encouraged to attend the two-part social justice training to learn more about CRS's platform and organizing principles.

Update on Collection Plate-Sharing
donate Organizations to receive plate-sharing dollars, 50% of the plate of a designated month, are selected by the Social Justice Council (SJC).  Members of 2U who are active with a tax-exempt organization involved in social justice or social service work may secure an application form and submit it through the church office. It will also be available through the website's members-only section, now under development.

Applicants are provided an opportunity to meet face-to-face with the SJC, which meets after services the first Sunday of each month, for approximately 20 minutes. At this time we have already selected recipients for the April-June quarter. Applications for July-September will be due on May 15th. The SJC's June 1st meeting will provide an opportunity for face-to-face meetings with these applicants. If you are considering applying, please feel free to approach Curtis Smith, SJC Chair, or Norm Groetzinger, who is coordinating the plate-sharing program on behalf of SJC. Electronic submissions are preferred, so that we can distribute them to the entire SJC in advance of the meeting. I can be reached at [email protected] or (773) 525-4262.

Theological Education Forum
Sunday, April 7, 2013
12:15-1:00pm

Ever consider formalized theological education? What is that, anyway? Join us on April 7th from 12:15-1:00 in the Sanctuary to learn more about theological education and how you can get involved. Nic Cable, a UU and Master of Divinity student at Chicago Theological Seminary, as well as Darrick Jackson, Director of Contextual Ministry at Meadville Lombard Theological School will facilitate this event. They will provide information about different models of theological education and offer time for lots of questions and answers.

Whether you are very interested in theological education or completely unsure about what that might mean, we hope you can make it to this gathering!
Child Dedication
Sunday, April 14, 2013

Each spring and fall, we at 2U share in the dedication of members' children who have come into our community. Whether babies or teenagers, we celebrate and welcome all those who have not yet come of age, and offer up our promise to be alongside them as they grow in their faith. If you and your children would like to participate in the upcoming child dedication ceremony on April 14th, please contact Director of Faith Development
Kellie Kelly.
Share Stories, Mold Character:
Our Children's and Your Own
intergen chaliceDid you know Susan B. Anthony was a Unitarian?

No? Then we need YOU to volunteer in our Children and Youth Faith Development program (CYFD)!

Have you heard the story of Buddha's Birthday? Do you know all 7 UU Promises and what colors of the rainbow each represents?

No? Then we need YOU to volunteer in our Spirit Play classrooms (preschool through 2nd grade)!

We are in GREAT need of Spirit Play storytellers and doorkeepers.  No experience is required-- just a willingness to spend some time with our young ones. We're looking for folks to volunteer one Sunday a month (classes take place during the normal Sunday services). We have wonderful and experienced teachers who started out just like you.

Depending on your interest, you can tell our UU stories using prepared story baskets or you can assist the storyteller with attendance, individual "work" time (aka individual play), and Feast (no cooking required either, hehe).

If you are interested or just curious, please contact Director of Faith Development Kellie Kelly for more information (a background check is required).
