IL Marriage Equality Update: Your Help Is Needed!

IL UnitesThe current Illinois marriage equality bill, Senate Bill 10, passed the Illinois Senate on Valentine's Day and the House Executive Committee on Tuesday, February 26. The only vote remaining is on the House floor, but the outcome remains in doubt.

Illinois Unites for Marriage, a coalition of organizations including Equality Illinois, the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, Lambda Legal, and dozens of others, needs volunteers to call voters in swing districts and ask them to call their representatives. To that end, Illinois Unites for Marriage is hosting daily phone bank events until the bill passes, both right here in Lakeview at the Equality Illinois offices at 3318 North Halsted, and downtown at the ACLU offices at 180 North Michigan. You can sign up for either phone bank at www.illinoisunites.org/events.

Legislators pay close attention to the number of calls they get, and one call from you could make the difference between success and failure on the House floor.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call or email me at (630) 779-5424 or [email protected].

Thank you. Thank you for everything.

A Service on Service
A Patchwork Service presented by your Board of Trustees
Sunday, March 3, 2013
10:30am

At 2U, each of us has something to give. Giving of our time and talent is our gift to the church, others, and ourselves. Service can be our actions for justice, equity, and compassion in human relations. Our willingness to serve can stand as proof of our belief in the inherent worth and dignity of all people. Please join us for this patchwork service with mini-homilies from board members Jonathan Dunmore, Andrea LeVasseur, Gregory Redfeairn, and Monica Drane. We will explore what it means to serve and how we can find ways to serve in our lives.
Night Ministry Outreach
Tuesday, March 5, 2013
5:00pm-10:30pm

Volunteers are still needed for our monthly Night Ministry outreach! Please consider spending a few hours either prepping, from around 5pm-8pm, or serving, from around 8pm-10:30pm. Contact David Gutowsky with questions.

Community Renewal Society 2-Part Organizing Training
Saturdays, March 23 & April 13, 2013
9:00am-12:00pm

To live our faith most authentically, we need to be effective practitioners of justice. In this two-part training, we will learn how to build relationships, power, and new justice ministries in our congregation. This training is for people who want to learn how to make change to build a more just community, and for any lay leaders who want some free leadership development. Breakfast provided.

Please email Megan Selby with questions or to RSVP, or sign up on the Welcome Table.
Fiber Arts Bunch

Social Group for Retirees & Active Seniors

12:30pm

We will be meeting again on March 13th, 2013 in the Palmer Room at 2U. Basic victuals will be hearty soup, one vegetarian, one meat-laden.

Participants are encouraged to add to the feast, but this is not mandatory. Please contact Gary Bondurant if you intend to participate, and let him know what you can contribute.

We will continue to get to know each other and share ideas about how we will function and what our goals are to be. You don't necessarily need to be a 2U member to participate. We hope to see you there!
Building & Grounds Work Party
Sunday, March 17, 2013  Toolbox
12:00pm

Space in the Utility Closet: The Final Frontier!

How are you at organizing things? On March 17th at 12:00, Building & Grounds will have a work party to reorganize the big downstairs utility closet. Lots of important stuff is stored down there. (Light bulbs, tools etc.) Can we make things easier to find? If you have ideas about organizing the closet, or if you'd just like to pitch in and help move stuff around, please contact Don MacGregor at (773) 517-7334.
From the Young Adult Group

On March 17, the Young Adult Group will have their monthly brunch following services, and on March 24, they will have circle worship following services. For more details on these events and the group in general, please email Erin Rusmi and David Dyer at [email protected].
Welcome to our Newest 2U Member

Shaun Boosinger hails from Springfield, Illinois. He came to Chicago to attend Harold Washington College, where he is studying computer science. In his free time, Shaun enjoys rollerblading, watching hockey, and exploring Chicago. He attended the UU Church in Springfield and was already acquainted with members of the 2U Young Adult Group when he came to 2U in August. Shaun has joined a small group and is thinking about joining the choir or assisting with The Night Ministry.

A warm welcome to Shaun!!!!

Better Government Association:
Citizen Watchdog Training
Thursday, March 7, 2013 BGA Watchdog
6:30-8:30pm

You are invited to the Better Government Association's seminar about keeping watch over your government, right here at 2U.

This is an informational session to help people learn how they can use the Freedom of Information Act and the Open Meetings Act to be watchdogs over their governments and get the information they need.

Expert presenters from the Illinois Attorney General's Public Access Bureau and Kirkland & Ellis LLP will teach you all you need to know to keep an eye on your local government. Members of the BGA Investigative Unit also will be there.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information or to RSVP, please click here or email Stephanie Simon, Civic Engagement Coordinator at BGA.
Child Dedication
Sunday, April 14, 2013

Each spring and fall, we at 2U share in the dedication of members' children who have come into our community. Whether babies or teenagers, we celebrate and welcome all those who have not yet come of age, and offer up our promise to be alongside them as they grow in their faith. If you and your children would like to participate in the upcoming child dedication ceremony on April 14th, please contact Director of Faith Development
Kellie Kelly.
Share Stories, Mold Character:
Our Children's and Your Own
intergen chalice Did you know Susan B. Anthony was a Unitarian?

No? Then we need YOU to volunteer in our Children and Youth Faith Development program (CYFD)!

Have you heard the story of Buddha's Birthday? Do you know all 7 UU Promises and what colors of the rainbow each represents?

No? Then we need YOU to volunteer in our Spirit Play classrooms (preschool through 2nd grade)!

We are in GREAT need of Spirit Play storytellers and doorkeepers.  No experience is required-- just a willingness to spend some time with our young ones. We're looking for folks to volunteer one Sunday a month (classes take place during the normal Sunday services). We have wonderful and experienced teachers who started out just like you.

Depending on your interest, you can tell our UU stories using prepared story baskets or you can assist the storyteller with attendance, individual "work" time (aka individual play), and Feast (no cooking required either, hehe).

If you are interested or just curious, please contact Kellie Kelly for more information (a background check is required).

Choir Corner
sheet music The choir rehearses around the piano in the sanctuary on Tuesday evenings at 7:30. Enjoy the warmth of musical community in the cold of winter. For more information, email music director Marianne Parker, or just come to a rehearsal. All voices are welcome!
