From the Minister

Holidays of all kinds call us to remember that the world is both magical and mundane, joyous and sorrowful, uncertain and hopeful. The winter holidays remind us of life and abundance, even if the world looks barren or limited. Generosity has become an important way we remind ourselves of abundance and the goodness of life.
So, in this season of generosity, I am happy to let you know that 2U has been the recipient of some significant gifts. First, a donor (who wishes to remain anonymous) gave us the money needed to replace all our old, heavy folding tables with new sturdy, lightweight tables. Our old tables have been given away, leaving us with 21 new tables that can be lifted easily and safely by one or two adults. The state, weight, and safety of our old tables was a significant concern of mine, so I am thrilled that we now have more tables that are safer than what we had before.
Second, in keeping with the great generosity that Seymour and Esther Fleishman showed to 2U over the course of their many decades' long membership, Seymour was kind enough to remember our congregation in his will. He left us a bequest of nearly $58,000 to be deposited into the Fleishman Reserve, which we have done. This gift replenishes our reserves and gives us the ability to make important choices about our budget and financial options going forward.
Such gifts to the congregation are not possible for everyone to make, of course, but generosity of all kinds and at all levels of ability enable us to support one another and help the wider community. I hope that these gifts inspire you to give in ways that meet great needs both at home, at 2U, and in the world!
With blessings and hopes for happy holidays,
Rev. Adam

Winter Solstice Celebration
| |
Friday, December 21, 2012
6:30 pm
You are invited to celebrate Winter Solstice on Friday, December 21, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This is the 7th year of celebrating Winter Solstice at 2U and we look forward to seeing you at the ritual again this year. If you haven't joined us before, please join us this year.
Yule, or the Winter Solstice, marks the longest night of the year. In the Pagan tradition it is when the Earth Goddess gives birth to the Sun God. Once born, the Sun God gains strength making the days longer, and the Earth Goddess gains strength preparing the land for a new round of harvests. As part of this natural cycle, people have used the dark time of winter for rest and rejuvenation, some of us have faced pain and fear during this time, but we all come together on the Winter Solstice to move forward into the light, the time of rebirth, renewal and rebuilding.
Community time after the Yule Ritual will be potluck. Please bring a snack or drink to share.

From Your Community Minister
|
Dear congregants,
My community ministry has been very busy this semester. A Community Minister serves a hands-on ministry in the local community, outside the congregation, but is affiliated with (and not paid by) a congregation. Truman College, just up the road on Broadway & Wilson, is my community ministry. I have had the pleasure of serving a number of 2U & Night Ministry congregants there; I pray that I served them well.
The senior religion professor retired last year, so I am now the senior one. WOW the "senior" one. That takes getting used to (plus I turned 50, so I'm getting AARP junk mail as well)!
I'm excited about the new teaching prospects. This semester, for example, I had Introduction to Religion. It's a really fun course! I had forgotten how much time and effort is needed to design & deliver a new course. It takes a professor two or three times teaching a course to work out all the kinks.
I also have been re-teaching courses that I have not taught in a while, due to my break from teaching while I was Associate Dean. This semester, I offered Non-Western Humanities: The Islamic Humanities. It's a really great course with great art and literature. I spend a lot of time equipping students with the critical skills to examine and dispel inaccurate stereotypes about the diversity of Islamic religion and culture, including depictions of their Prophet Muhammad. Did you know that Reformation-era Trinitarian Christians accused our Unitarian forbearers of Islamic heresies, because of our rejection of the Trinity?
One of the challenges has been an influx of underprepared students. With the prolonged economic downturn, we are getting more and more students who are not ready for college. 90% lack college math skills, and some 60-80% are below par when it comes to English. For the first time ever, I've had students tell me they just don't understand the textbooks. Plus some have unrealistic expectations about the amount of time and work a college course expects. Two-thirds of the work is outside class. Consequently, I and my colleagues (at Truman College, other City Colleges of Chicago, as well as elsewhere) have had unusually high absenteeism and failure rates. This concerns me gravely. Students can succeed, but they need to avail themselves of tutoring and other support services, as well as set aside the time necessary for college study. I find that need to remember the spiritual dictum, "Give without looking to see who takes." One of my students told me that students know what they need to do: it's up to them to apply themselves.
This Spring, I'll be teaching Hebrew Scriptures. In the Fall I'll have Islamic Scriptures: The Qur'an. I'm using my Winter break to prepare for both courses, especially the Qur'an one. I'm taking a graduate course on the Qur'an through our UU seminary in Chicago, Meadville-Lombard, this January. Lots of reading! Some of it's interesting, some very technical, and some inspirational. The college has also asked me to resurrect a course from ages ago, LGBT Humanities, for the Spring-Summer inter-semester next year.
Part of a community minister's duties to the congregation is a volunteer commitment. This year, I'm one of the 2U OWL: Our Whole Lives Lifespan Sexuality Education Curricula teachers, together with Bonnie Ewald, with Mary Sue Barrett as family liaison. Working with them and Kellie has been a pleasure. I think we make a great team.
Wishing everyone a Blessed Yule, Bright Solstice, Happy Hanukkah, and Merry Christmas this holiday season!
In faith and fellowship,
Rev. Rudra Dundzila
2U Community Minister

Building & Grounds Work Party
|
January 6, 2013
12:30pm
The Building and Grounds committee needs YOU to help winterize the sanctuary! We'll be putting up plastic sheeting over the drafty sanctuary windows on January 6th after the service. Munchies will be provided! If you can, bring a hair dryer (to seal the plastic) and extension cord. Please contact Don MacGregor with questions, or to sign up to help.
Big thanks to every one who participated in our first work party on December 2nd! Our hard-working team did an excellent and efficient job of insulating the loft windows for the winter.

Start the new year with singing! Join the choir! The 2U choir will take a break from rehearsals during the holidays, but rehearsals will resume on January 8. The choir rehearses around the piano in the sanctuary on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. For more information, email music director Marianne Parker, catch Marianne on a Sunday morning, or just come to a rehearsal.
