From the Minister

Happy (nearly) Thanksgiving, everyone! I am thankful for being a part of 2U this year, and look forward to sharing the holiday traditions that we've created and continued together once again.

Wed, Nov 21: Church Office Closed & Vespers Cancelled

We're giving the church staff a well-deserved day off to start preparing for Thanksgiving dinner, or to catch a breath, whichever makes sense.

Wed, Nov 28th 7:00pm: Holiday Decorating Party

Come decorate the sanctuary and Palmer Room for the holidays! The staff will provide the decorations, the music, and the coffee, tea, and hot cocoa; you can provide the laughter, the hands, and the fellowship to get us ready for the holiday season.

Sunday, Dec 9th: Holiday Music Service & Cookie Sale

If you're not in the holiday spirit by this Sunday, you certainly should be afterward! Our 2U musicians will provide a service of beautiful and enjoyable music in the morning and then our 2U bakers will provide a way to support the church and have plenty of holiday cookies as well.

Please take a break during the busy weeks of December to join us on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:00 for our Advent Vespers services! With singing, readings, and stillness, we'll remember that this season is about hope, faith, joy, and love -- no matter what stories you cherish or holidays you celebrate.

Faithfully,

Rev. Adam

Annual 2U Holiday Cookie Sale

Sunday, December 9, 2012 gingerbread man

11:30 am

Enjoy the beautiful music on this Music Sunday, and afterwards purchase a variety of homemade cookies and other baked goods to enjoy or give as gifts. This is a wonderful 2U tradition.

Cookie bakers and volunteers to help on the day of the event are needed. A sign-up sheet will be on the What's Happening table, or contact Barb Hailey at (773) 844-8846 or Kate Friedlob at (773) 528-0884 for more information.

Chicago Filmmakers Screening: Beyond Pollution
Friday, November 16, 2012
8:00 pm

The Chicago premiere of Beyond Pollution, with special guests: director Barker White, producers Harper Robinson & Christopher Shaw, and executive producer Margaret Marvin in attendance!

A firsthand investigation of BP's disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, this film uncovers what really happened and why. The production team traveled across the gulf coast interviewing environmental experts, government authorities, fishermen, scientists, drilling engineers and key BP contractors to unveil a shocking tale of greed and corruption that culminated in the largest man-made environmental disaster in America's history. Beyond Pollution examines the economic impact and health effects this tragedy will have on the local communities, both immediate and long term, and how the communities are fighting back to save their towns and the planet. (Directed by Barker White, USA, 2012, 90 min)

Presented by the Chicago Filmmakers Co-op.

2012 H.E.L.L.O. Art Show
Monday, November 19, 2012
7:00 to 9:00 pm

"Elastic Life: Climbing Out of the Abyss" is the theme of this year's H.E.L.L.O. Art & Poetry Show.

H.E.L.L.O. (Homeless Experts Living Life's Obstacles) is a group sponsored by the Night Ministry, the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, and the Lakeview Action Coalition. It's made up of youth who are currently homeless, or who have been homeless, and focuses on art and activism.

2U is pleased to be hosting this powerful art show again this year. Please be aware that this raw and fabulous show is not necessarily kid-appropriate; parental discretion is advised. The show is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!
Thanksgiving Pot-Luck
turkey doodle Thursday, November 22, 2012
12:00 pm

A turkey revival! 2U will host a Thanksgiving pot-luck dinner on Thursday, November 22. The long-time tradition has been on hiatus; however, Judy Corbeille and the Danner-McPhaden family have agreed to coordinate dinner. They will cook the bird and dressing, while those who wish to attend should plan to bring a dish to share.

Sign up on the What's Happening table in the Palmer Room, or contact Judy Corbeille at (773) 525-9416 with any questions.
The Mayan Calendar: Reflections on Time
Sunday, November 25
10:30 am

The ancient Mayan calendar ends on 12/21/2012 and has been the subject of speculation, myth, spirituality and research for hundreds of years. Some think it marks the end of the world; others see it as a herald of a new age. In any event, it has captured our collective imaginations.

Do the Mayans have anything to say to us about our current time period? Did they tap into a spiritual truth that we are just beginning to understand? Or is it all just a good story?

Seminarian Janice Stashwick will explore these questions and reflect on the concept of time on a cosmic, cultural and personal level.
Choir Corner

Minimal Commitment - Maximum Fun
green caterpillar
2U toddlers are looking for you! We are in need of one or more volunteers in our Green Caterpillar Room (toddlers to age 3). Your commitment is one hour a month. No experience is necessary; just a willingness to play, tell stories, color and have fun with our youngsters. Our most urgent need is for the fourth Sunday of each month. A background check is required.

This is a great way to volunteer service to our community! If you are interested or curious, please email DFD Kellie Kelly.
Upcoming Social Justice Events

There are four ways we can support Community Renewal Society (CRS), a progressive, faith-based organization of which 2U is a member. CRS's FORCE Project, a group of formerly incarcerated people fighting for the restoration of employment, housing, and education rights, is launching two campaigns we can support in the following ways:
  1. Fill out a postcard after Sunday's service to tell Walgreens to "Ban the Box" on their employment applications. Look for Norm and Raquel.
  2. Come with us to Springfield Wed. Nov. 28th to demand our legislators support a bill that increase employment opportunities for people with records.
  3. Save the date! Sunday, Dec. 16 at 12:00pm: Help us welcome a member of FORCE at a Spotlight Luncheon on issues facing formerly incarcerated people.
  4. Save the date! Monday, Jan. 21 MLK Day: Join other people of faith as we hold our legislators accountable to making the changes our communities need.
Contact Megan Selby with any questions.

Chicago Care Congress
Saturday Dec. 1st 10:30am - 3:00pm
2229 S. Halsted, SEIU Local Hall
RSVP to Raquel Garcia

In June, members of 2U joined the Latino Union of Chicago in our National Day of Witness on issues of Immigration Justice. Now we are invited to join them at Chicago's Care Congress - the launch of the Caring Across Generations campaign, which seeks to build a new movement of everyday people to transform long-term care. Together we are introducing federal legislation to create 2 million new, quality jobs in home care; improve access to care and support services; develop career advancement models and a path to citizenship for domestic and home care workers; improve and expand Medicare and Medicaid along with an industrial strength solution to affordability challenges for those paying out-of-pocket for care.

Please sign up on the 'What's Happening' table in the Palmer Room, or contact John Broome, chair of the membership committee, with any questions or to register for a session.

This fall, Bill McKibben and 350.org are going on tour across America to build the movement we need to face the crisis of climate change.

On Nov. 28th, Bill will be in Chicago to lay out the terrifying new math of climate change, explaining the incredible odds we face, and the difficult path we must walk in the coming years to crate a livable future for our planet.

Bill will be joined by friends from across the climate movement and beyond to explain how together we can confront the fossil fuel industry, using lessons from the most successful movements of the past century and the past year of dramatic new actions against the industry across the country.
