A Message from the Reverend Andy Dunks

Happy St. Seraphim's Day!

icon
have an icon in my office, precariously perched on a stack of books where it looks over me as I sit at my desk. On it is a kindly but unassuming-looking old man. The icon is of Seraphim of Sarov, one of the favorite saints of the Russian people. His feast day is today, August 1st [Old Calendar]. Seraphim was from peasant stock, and lived as a simple hermit for most of his life, quietly pursuing a life of prayer and union with God. In his later years, as directed by God, he left his forest home and joined a monastic community, where he became renown as a wise counselor, confessor and miracle-worker. He foresaw the Communist revolution to begin shortly after his death, and prophesied both about the coming persecution of the Russian Church, and of its eventual restoration. Seraphim is known in the Western church as a "charismatic" saint who proclaimed and participated in the ministry of the Holy Spirit, and is also known as "the Eastern St. Francis" because of his love for animals and their love for him - as demonstrated by the tendency of bears to come and lay at his feet whenever he went into the woods to pray!

I read St. Seraphim's biography and purchased an icon of him many years ago, I believe even before seminary, and have returned to his teachings, and sought his prayers, for quite some time. Here is a short, simple saying of his which have guided me well for many years.

"Acquire the Spirit of Peace, and thousands around you will be saved."

This reminds me that my chief ministry as a Christian is to become someone in whom God dwells. My job is to be open and obedient; any fruit that I bear is much more dependent on this than on my talent, brilliant ideas, personal charisma or leadership abilities, etc. It's always about God-through-me, not about what I, in my own strength, can do for God. If I pursue God, everything else will work out.

So how does one acquire the Holy Spirit? Fr. Seraphim would say that it is from thousands of small, daily acts of repentance, forgiveness, self-denial and active love - nothing mysterious at all, no secret formula for holiness, nor any short-cut to it. As Fr. Stephen Freeman puts it:

Grace is a gift. You don't have to go anywhere to get what you already have been given. What we need to do is allow the grace of God to work in us what God intends. Thus St. Paul urges: "We entreat you not to receive the grace of God in vain!" (2 Corinthians 6:1)
Mission
Our mission is to seek, serve, and celebrate Christ in every person.
We invite the community to worship with us, to share our gifts, and to grow in Christ's love.

Each of us have been given the grace of God for our salvation - that is to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit and to conform us to the image of God in Christ. The question is what do we do with it?

This is a question particularly about the small things of the day. Do we pray? Do we begin the day by crossing ourselves before our feet ever hit the floor? When tempted to grumble do we refrain and give thanks instead? Do we condemn others, even when we could have been silent? Do we forgive when we could have nursed a grudge?

There is grace for each of these things and thousands more. We are able, because God has made us able. Grace that is put to use in our lives produces dividends of grace. St. Seraphim did not become what he was through a momentary gift, but through a lifetime of "reinvesting" the grace given him.

Here are some words of the saint whom we can apply to our daily struggle for holiness:

You cannot be too gentle, too kind. Shun even to appear harsh in your treatment of each other. Joy, radiant joy, streams from the face of him who gives, and kindles joy in the heart of him who receives.

All condemnation is from the devil. Never condemn each other...instead of condemning others, strive to reach inner peace.

God is a fire that warms and kindles the heart and inward parts. Hence, if we feel in our hearts the cold which comes from the devil-for the devil is cold-let us call on the Lord. He will come to warm our hearts with perfect love, not only for Him but also for our neighbor, and the cold of him who hates the good will flee before the heat of His countenance."

Blessings,

Book Sale and Signing After Church This Sunday

John Mayen Deng, a member of our Sudanese congregation, will offer copies for
sale of his new book, A Lost Boy Found: Never Give Up! It is an inspirational
autobiography, detailing his transition from life in a Sudanese village to school
and adulthood in America. John is a devout Christian and a patriot, with a real story
to tell of God's grace under trial.

Though proud to be an American, John has never lost sight of the needs of his
homeland, and he is devoting his life to the relief of suffering Sudanese refugees less
fortunate than himself. All proceeds from the sale of this book will go towards his
efforts to fund medical missionaries in Sudanese refugee camps.

Copies of the book are $10, and cash or checks will be accepted.  A short presentation
on the current situation, with the opportunity for questions, will also be given. Please
make every effort to support this ministry.

Coffee Hour

Please consider signing up to sponsor coffee hour after a 10:30AM service. All
you have to do is bring goodies to share, stay and enjoy the company and then
clean up afterwards. This time gives us the opportunity to get to know other
members and welcome visitors.

There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board.

First Sunday Food Donations for the Hungry

We continue to collect food donations on the first Sunday of each month.
If you forget that scheduled collection date, just add your donations
to the
box to the right of the door anytime. We are currently delivering
the food to the Lamb's Basket Food Pantry in the Lakeside neighborhood. While
they accept any canned or packaged, food, items they regularly distribute to
each family the following products:

Pasta sauces
Soups
Beans
Vegetables
macaroni and cheese boxes
dry pasta
fruit (they have a goodly supply of fruit right now.)

In addition, they offer choices of juices, staples such as cooking oil, condiments
and a shelf of toiletries, detergents and paper goods. On my last delivery, they
mentioned they were low on baby food.

They would also like to have a steady source of fresh eggs. Due to our storage
constraints, I purchase eggs on the way to deliver the food. If anyone wants to
donate cash for eggs, I would be happy to add that to my donation.

Thank you for your support of this outreach project.

how we can
help the church and community.

We would like to provide dinner for the youth group on the Sundays
