A Message from the Reverend Andy Dunks

Holy Week 2016: What, When and Why

In our Holy Week services, we act out the events of Jesus' last week of ministry. Acting out helps us to learn, to internalize what we believe, and to achieve a very real spiritual connection with Christ through this form of worship. I urge you most strongly to plan to attend all of these services. Easter alone does not suffice to show us the depth of Christ's sacrificial love for us, nor the depth of our need for that sacrifice. All over the world, Christ's Body the Church will

Palm Sunday: March 20th, 8:30 and 10:30am

We begin by "acting up" - shouting and singing loud "Hosannas" and waving palm fronds as we remember how Jesus was raucously welcomed into Jerusalem by the crowds who very much wanted him to be their king. We want him to be our King as well. The service quickly turns somber, though, as we reenact the story of his betrayal, trial and crucifixion. Were some of the people who shouted "Crucify him!" the same ones who had earlier welcomed him with joy? Did they turn on Jesus because he wasn't the kind of king they wanted? Could we ever behave so badly? What would be His response to us if we did?

Maundy Thursday: March 24, 7:30pm

Maundy is an Old English form of the Latin mandatum, which means mandatory. Jesus says we must wash each other's feet if we are to truly belong to him. We will explore the deep meaning of these words, as we literally wash each other's feet as an expression of our desire to serve any and all, and (even harder) to be vulnerable enough to accept their ministry to us. Yes, foot washing is a bit awkward and embarrassing; that's the point! We are the Body of Christ, and we are to love and serve each other.   We are the Body, and yet we also eat the Body: After the foot washing, we move on to the Last Supper, where Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist. He told us to remember His works,  and to eat and drink His very Life, that He may live in us, and we in Him.

Good Friday Stations of the Cross: March 25, Noon and 7:30pm

Called "Good" because it was good for us, though immeasurably painful for Jesus, we will walk the Stations of the Cross. At each station there will be scripture, a prayer together, and a short time of silent reflection. We walk, to act out our desire to walk with Jesus through thick and thin, and we acknowledge that only through his grace can we have the strength to do so. I find this to be a very tender yet powerful service, which makes me more vividly aware of Christ's extravagant, incomprehensible love for us sinners.
Mission
Our mission is to seek, serve, and celebrate Christ in every person.
We invite the community to worship with us, to share our gifts, and to grow in Christ's love.

Easter Vigil: Saturday March 26, 7:30pm

In the Jewish culture of Jesus' time, the new day begins at sunset rather than sunrise, and so Saturday evening is actually the first service of Easter Day. We begin outside the church in darkness, symbolizing the darkness of human sin and our exile from paradise. A new fire is lit, symbolizing the hope of the Resurrection. From it, we light our own candles, symbolizing the light given to us at our baptism, and solemnly process into the church, after banging on the doors, as Christ shattered the doors of hell.   Inside, we hear the story of God's work throughout the history of His chosen people to bring to fruition His plan of salvation. We will renew our baptismal promises, and then the lights come on, and the "Alleluias" begin! The order of service used this night is ancient, powerful and evocative. Bishop Johnston says that this is the "real" Easter service, and Sunday morning is simply for those who could not attend the Vigil. I urge you to give it a try. You will be glad you did.

Easter Sunday: March 27,   8:30 and 10:30am

Again we celebrate the Good News of Christ's victory over death. We will renew our own baptismal promises, partake of the Eucharist, and sing many "Alleluias". Be sure to greet new visitors, because this is when they will be most likely to come, and they will certainly find it hard to believe the gospel of love and new life in Christ if we do not manifest His love to them!

There will be no children's chapel for these services. Children and youth will benefit by participating in them as fully as possible.

There will be no adult education between the services on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. Please use this time for refreshments and fellowship.

May God be with us all as we join together to contemplate the mighty acts by which His son Jesus set us free from bondage to sin and death.

Amen,

First Sunday Food Donations for the Hungry

We continue to collect food donations on the first Sunday of each month.
If you forget that scheduled collection date, just add your donations to the
box to the right of the door anytime. We are currently delivering the food
to the Lamb's Basket Food Pantry in the Lakeside neighborhood. While they
accept any canned or packaged, food, items they regularly distribute to each
family the following products:

Pasta sauces
Soups
Beans
Vegetables
macaroni and cheese boxes
dry pasta
fruit (they have a goodly supply of fruit right now.)

In addition, they offer choices of juices, staples such as cooking oil, condiments
and a shelf of toiletries, detergents and paper goods. On my last delivery, they
mentioned they were low on baby food.

They would also like to have a steady source of fresh eggs. Due to our storage
constraints, I purchase eggs on the way to deliver the food. If anyone wants to
donate cash for eggs, I would be happy to add that to my donation.

Thank you for your support of this outreach project.
Girl Scout Sunday at St. Bart's

This past Sunday we celebrated with current and former Girl Scouts. The organization
was well represented during the service and we had a great reception to celebrate them.

Here is a picture of the former and current members.
