YOUR CHOICE FOR AN INDEPENDENT VOICE!
Representing 5300 members including staff at the Vermont State Colleges

voice at work

As UVM staff, we have a decision to make:

Do we want to be treated as a suggestion box

or participate as a full partner?

Currently, UVM's faculty (members of United Academics-AFT-AAUP) and the service, trades, and maintenance staff (members of Local 267 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers) are engaged in contract negotiations with the UVM Administration.

As members of a union, they have the legal authority to sit as equals with the Administration and bargain over key issues like wages, benefits and working conditions.

Over the years that the faculty and service and maintenance employees have been union-represented, they have succeeded in making many advances in their work, including the following examples:

  • improved medical leave and benefits;
  • increased parental leave from 6 weeks to 15 weeks;
  • secured tuition remission;
  • secured workload determination procedures;
  • union work release time;
  • helped define safe working conditions;
  • negotiated clear discipline procedures;
  • defined grievance procedures;
  • bargained intellectual property rights;
  • bargained the Cultural Holiday that was extended to all UVM employees;
  • bargained a process by which employees can challenge their job classifications and
  • secure wage increases;

Our UVM colleagues, have chosen to be full partners by working together in their unions.

We believe that we deserve the same opportunity to participate in the decisions that guide our professions. Join us in learning more and supporting our efforts as UVM staff to join the Vermont State Employees' Association (VSEA) and give staff the opportunity to fully participate in defining our workplace. For more information about VSEA, or for more information about signing a card: email to set up a time to get your questions answered.

When we, as UVM staff, vote to form a union we will have the right to negotiate a contract that defines the conditions of our workplace, our salary increases, our benefits and secure the pieces that we have come to expect and appreciate about working at UVM, including flexibility, retirement, and tuition remission.

Another good reason to have a contract:

Are you retiring this year?
Have you been pressured to use your vacation time before you retire? Hold fast!
The law is on your side!

From the US Dept of Labor website:

Benefits and/or Wage Supplements
An employer is not required to provide its employees with:
·  Paid or unpaid holidays (such as "Memorial Day" or "Thanksgiving");
·  Paid or unpaid sick leave (except under the Parental, Family Leave Act);
·  Paid or unpaid vacation time or severance pay when an employee leaves the business.
However, employers who are parties to written agreements, which can be in the form of an employee handbook, memorandum, or correspondence, that provide for vacation time, sick leave, holidays and/or severance pay are liable to their employees for these benefits.
In a collective bargaining agreement (union contract) where benefits and/or wage supplements are offered, an aggrieved employee should contact his/her union representative.

Employees aggrieved over unpaid retirement or profit sharing plans should contact the ERISA Division of the U.S. Department of Labor at (617) 565-9600 or e-mail at www.dol.gov/ebsa
___________
As per the UVM Staff Handbook listed on the UVM website:

"Vacation:
Vacation time is earned on a monthly basis, is based on one's fulltime equivalency (FTE), and may not be taken before it is earned. Vacation time may be taken with advance permission of
your supervisor any time after you have earned it, except that it may not be taken during your probationary period.
In no case may you receive pay instead of vacation while you are an employee at the University.

Upon termination of your employment you may receive payment for your accrued vacation time, however it will never amount to more than the equivalent of two times your annual allocation of vacation accumulation, up to a maximum of 40 days for non-exempt employees and 44 days for exempt employees."

A VSEA member: In support of UVM Staff organizing

VSEA Member Rachael Fields

My name is Rachael Fields. I have been a state employee at the Vermont veteran's home for nine years. I am a steward, vice president of VSEA's Bennington chapter and I serve on VSEA's Board of Trustees.

   Being a VSEA member allows me to fight for better services to Vermont's veterans and to advocate for my patients. Without VSEA, my voice would be drowned out in the 'race for profits' atmosphere which dominates the healthcare industry. I know that when I stand up for my patients I do not stand alone!

   I am excited at the prospect of UVM staff joining the VSEA family because I believe education is a human right and that a strong society is built when its citizens have access to quality higher education. There are so many stumbling blocks that prevent many Vermonters from having access to successful education. Joining VSEA will not only give you a 'seat at the table' with management, it will give you a collective voice to improve the services you provide and to fight for the students you serve.

    Please contact me with any questions or concerns you might have. I would love to share with you the success we've had, in our union, fighting for better care for our veterans and improving our working conditions.

MORE ABOUT VSEA

What Is the Vermont State Employees' Association?

The Vermont State Employees' Association is an independent union of over 5,300 Vermont workers that have joined together to have a voice in the decisions that affect our jobs.

In addition to the clerical and technical staff at the Vermont State Colleges, our union consists of state employees

At the core of the union's program is the work that members and staff do together to bargain contracts with management and ensure that these agreements are upheld in each of our workplaces.

VSEA has a team of professional staff to support members in enforcing

the contracts, training workplace stewards, carrying out direct action on key issues, lobbying, communications and legal support.
