Roselle Police Department: Be Aware of Ruse Burglaries
|
According to the Roselle Police Department, there has been an increase in the number of ruse burglaries in Roselle and surrounding communities. The groups committing the burglaries have targeted elde rly residents who may be alone at home.
The offenders often represent themselves as driveway sealers, landscapers, fence installers, roof repairmen, or act as if they just moved into the neighborhood. Generally, one offender distracts the homeowner while another offender enters the home and commits the burglary. Many times, one offender will distract the homeowner while talking on a cell phone in a language the homeowner does not understand, directing the other offender on how to enter the home. These burglaries often go unnoticed for some time, giving these offenders time to leave the area with little description for the police.
Be cautious of unsolicited contractors. Do not let anyone into your home without first verifying who they are. Do not allow someone to distract you by taking you to another part of your property. Keep all doors locked and garage doors closed when unattended. Please call 911 right away for any suspicious activity.
