Construction Update: Street Improvement Program

Construction for the Village's Annual Street Improvement Program is expected to begin the week of May 23 and be completed by mid-September, weather permitting.

During construction, the roadways are expected to remain open, but driveway access may temporarily be restricted during curb replacement. Temporary road closures may be necessary and residents may be required to park on the street overnight while concrete curbs are removed and replaced.

A full list of streets included in the 2016 Street Improvement Program is available on the Village's website.

Message from the Mayor: ComEd High-Voltage Line Update
Mayor Smolinski
On behalf of the Village Board, I'd like to provide an update on the progress we've made in our opposition to ComEd's proposed West Central Reliability Plan. Like you, the Village Board was very concerned when we learned that ComEd wanted to run a high-voltage electric line through Roselle in an area that is adjacent to residential properties. While ComEd has delayed its filing of a request for approval of its plan with the ICC until later this year, the coalition of communities opposing it has been very active, meeting with stakeholders, leaders in our neighboring communities, county and township officials, state legislators, lobbyists, and legal counsel to work together to oppose the West Central Reliability Plan in its current form.

A product of that collaborative work is legislation that would require running the high-voltage lines underground. House Bill 6570, proposed by Representative Fred Crespo on behalf of the coalition of communities opposing ComEd's plan, was filed in Springfield on May 4. State Senator Laura Murphy filed identical legislation, Senate Bill 3425, on May 10.

I would like to thank State Senator Murphy and State Representative Crespo for introducing the legislation requiring the high voltage lines to be run underground on behalf of the coalition. I would urge you to contact them to offer your thanks and support for the proposed legislation as well. Contact information for State Senator Murphy and State Representative Crespo is available on their websites.
We will continue to provide updates on the progress of the proposed legislation in Springfield through our website, our weekly E-News newsletter, on Facebook, and in our quarterly newsletter, The Roselle Reporter.
More information about the proposed project and Village's coordinated response can be found on the Village's website.
Village Hosting Final Engagement Forum for
Comprehensive Plan Update June 7
The public feedback phase of Roselle's Comprehensive Plan update is wrapping up, with last of three public forums facilitated by the Village's consultant Ginkgo Planning and Design, Inc. The forum will be held on Tuesday, June 7 in Council Chambers at Roselle Village Hall, 31 S. Prospect St., from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The consultant team will share final plans for the Village's Town Center and the Metra station area, new trails for pedestrians and bicyclists, sites near the I-390 Interchange, and other exciting opportunities. All residents and business owners are invited to participate in this opportunity to review this bold plan for the future of Roselle that captures the vision of the community and inspires action.

Models, drawings, presentations, and lively discussions will be included in the forum, as the evening focuses on the completed draft of the Comprehensive Plan Update. The plan update tackles big questions like: What are the major assets of Roselle that should be preserved and strengthened? What is missing in Roselle today? What are three biggest challenges for the future? What would you like Roselle to be known for in the Chicago region?

A final report with recommendations for updating the Village's Comprehensive Plan is expected to be made to both the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Village Board this summer. This update to the Comprehensive Plan will help guide long-term land use and planning decisions for the next decade, and is one of the strategic goals set by the Roselle Village Board for 2014-2016.

Dog on Leash
Studies have found that roughly 40 percent of Americans don't pick up after their dogs' waste. Dog waste accounts for over 20 percent of the bacteria that pollutes urban and suburban waterways. You can help by picking up after your dog 100 percent of the time. Below are some tips on what you can do to help keep our watershed clean and healthy:
  • Always clean up after your dog on walks and remind your neighbors and friends to do the same.
  • Don't wait to scoop in your own yard - keep an eye out and scoop immediately.
  • Take multiple bags on walks, just in case.
  • Throw out dog waste using a bio-degradable bag OR flush waste down the toilet (where it will eventually end up in a wastewater treatment plant).
  • Do NOT throw dog waste in a compost bin.
As a reminder, dogs must be leashed and may not run loose. Additionally, dogs are prohibited at all public events in Roselle. Excluding dogs from events, such as the Rose Festival, the Rose Parade, Run for the Roses, the Taste of Roselle and others, is both for the protection of people and for the welfare of the dogs, who frequently become excited and unpredictable due to the large number of people.
