September 24: Lake Park High School West Campus Innovation Center Open House, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., at the school, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. The open house includes tours of the new 3,000 square foot center, machinery demonstrations, and a brief recognition program. Lake Park is a recognized "Project Lead the Way" school for science, technology, engineering and math, and secured over $180,000 in grants and donations toward the new Innovation Center.

September 26:
Bloomingdale VFW Post 7539 Veterans Clinic and Expo 8:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 405 Rush St., Roselle.
VA personnel will be present to process health care system enrollments, administer free flu shots, and file disability claims. Other exhibitors will be on site with current employment opportunities, affordable housing information, and to answer state and county benefit questions. Attendees should bring a copy of their DD214 to the seminar. 

September 27: Medinah Park District hosting the Northwest Suburban Concert Band for a free concert, 2:00 p.m. at Connolly Recreation Center, 22W130 Thorndale Ave. The concert features traditional music written for bass and woodwind concert bands.

September 28: Roselle Police Explorer Post #151 Open House, 6:30 p.m. at the Police Station, 103 S. Prospect St. The purpose of the Police Explorer program is to introduce students ages 14 to 20 to careers in law enforcement. Call (630) 671-4044 for more information.

September 30: Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control hosting Rabies Vaccine and Microchip Clinic, 10:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Schaumburg Township Highway Department Garage, 1 Illinois Blvd. Hoffman Estates. Cost for 1-year vaccine is $7;  3-year vaccine is $21; ferrets are $9 to vaccinate. Open to Cook County residents with a vaild ID.

September 30: Roselle Park District Job Interview Prep Class for teens 14 and up, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Clauss Recreation Center, 555 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. Class is free, register by September 28.

October 12: Roselle Park District Cupcake Competition for kids ages 11 to 15, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Clauss Recreation Center, 555 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. Registration deadline is October 6.

Construction Update: I-390 Detours This Weekend

Overnight lane closures with detours are scheduled this weekend on I-390 (former Elgin-O'Hare Expressway). The closures will occur overnight on September 26 and 27, and are necessary for work to continue on the Tollway's Elgin-O'Hare Western Access Project (EOWA).

Eastbound detours on I-390 between Wright Blvd. and Roselle Rd. are expected to begin at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26 with all eastbound lanes scheduled to reopen by 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 27. Westbound detours are expected to begin between Mitchell Blvd. and Roselle Rd. at 9:00 p.m. on September 27. All lanes are scheduled to reopen by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28.

Free Document Shredding Event September 26
document shred Roselle residents are invited to bring their confidential documents to be shredded on-site during a shredding event on Saturday, September 26, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Roselle Metra Station south parking lot at Irving Park Rd. and Maple Ave.

The quantity of documents to be shredded is limited to no more than 100 pounds per person. If desired, participants will be able to watch as their documents are being shredded, and shredded paper will be recycled. This free event is sponsored by Itasca Bank & Trust Co.
National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Event September 26   
The Village of Roselle is participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, September 26. Visit the Roselle Fire Station, 100 E. Maple Ave. (north side of building, off Prospect St.) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to safely dispose of accumulated unwanted, unused, and expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs during this event. Medication should be taken out of the original container or packaging and placed in a zip-lock bag. Please recycle plastic vials at home. Liquids or syringes will not be accepted.

This is part of a national effort sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). For more information, call the Village Clerk's Office at (630) 671-2802.
Trug Take Back Day
Fire Department Hosting Open House September 27     
Fire Department Open House Join the Roselle Fire Department as they celebrate National Fire Prevention Week with an open house on Sunday, September 27. The open house will take place at the Fire Station, 100 E. Maple, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Fire Department Open House festivities will include tours, refreshments, demonstrations, touch-a-truck, handouts, and other fire safety information. The Fire Department Open House provides a great opportunity for residents to ask firefighters questions about fire safety issues.

Roselle Chamber of Commerce Announces Service Awards    
New Chamber Logo The Roselle Chamber of Commerce recently announced the recipient of the Business Person of the Year for 2015 and the Brian K. Kealy Service award recipient.

Jared Wickstrom of Wickstrom Chevrolet is the 2015 Business Person of the Year, and Don Smolinski will receive the Brian K. Healy Service award this year.

Jared and Don will be honored at the Chamber's Annual Holiday Party on December 4. Visit the Roselle Chamber of Commerce website for details.
 
VFW Announces Scholarship Competition     
VFW logo
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Bloomingdale Post 7539 announces the kick-off of the 69th year of the VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. The theme of this year's essay contest is "My Vision for America".

Local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C. through the Voice of Democracy competition, which  is open to students in grades 9-12 nationwide who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program. 

The winner of the local competition, which is open to high school students who reside in Bloomingdale, Roselle, or Medinah, will be awarded $600 by VFW Post 7539 and will advance to the district competition. The winner of the district competition advances to the national competition, with a chance at winning a $30,000 scholarship.

The deadline for the competition is November 1. Local entries should be sent to VFW Post 7539 C/O Bloomingdale Library, 101 Fairfield Way, Bloomingdale, IL 60108. Visit the VFW online for entry forms and more details.
