Need to Know

The Supreme Court of the United States has denied The Falls Church CANA's petition for appeal. Read the statement from the Diocese here. Read a letter from the Bishop here.

Emmanuel Church in Southport England, in the Diocese of Liverpool, is interested in exploring a mission relationship with a church in the Diocese of Virginia. Emmanuel's proposal for a link is thoughtful and creative. This would be an excellent way for a church to have its first international relationship or to grow existing international relationships with our friends in the Diocese of Liverpool. For more information, please contact Buck Blanchard at bblanchard@thediocese.net.

Please keep those who take mission trips this month in your prayers: St. Catherine's School, Richmond, to the Dominican Republic (3/7-3/14); St. James's, Richmond, to Haiti (3/8-3/14); St. Matthew's, Sterling, to Israel and Jordan (3/17-3/24); St. Alban's, Annandale, to Crisfield, M.D. (3/18-3/22); St. Stephen's, Richmond, to the Dominican Republic (3/22-3/29). If your church is not on this list, or corrections are necessary, please contact Megan-Drew Tiller at intern@thediocese.net  or 800-DIOCESE x1019.

The Office of Mission and Outreach has updated our information on churches involved in the Dominican Republic. The most recent information can be found on the Dominican Republic Ministry page. If there are omissions or inaccuracies regarding your church's Dominican Republic ministry, please contact Megan-Drew Tiller at intern@thediocese.net or 800-DIOCESE x1019.

Giving Teens a Voice

If you attended this year's diocesan Annual Council in Richmond, then Hannah, Maddie and Grace are familiar faces. The three high school students are founding members of GIRLs, the Girls in Real Life group out of St. George's, Fredericksburg. During Council, the girls took part in the State of the Diocese presentation, with a "Speak Out" radio show similar to the one they offer each week at 99.3 The Vibe in Fredericksburg.

This week, the girls took their show on the road to the 58th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) in New York City. This is the second UNCSW visit for the St. George's delegation. In 2013, five girls made the trip.

This year, the group doubled in size, including two young men representatives from BOYS, the Building Our Youth in Solidarity group. The whole team participated in a teen orientation through the UN Working Group on Girls on Sunday and joined in worship at the Episcopal Church Center with the Rt. Rev. Chilton Knudsen, assistant bishop of the Diocese of New York.

The Millennium Development Goals were the focus for this year's UNCSW, but this time the Virginians did not just attend the workshop sessions: They led one.
