Need to Know  
  • Registration for the 218th Annual Council of the Diocese of Virginia is now open. Council will gather January 24-26 under the theme of "Setting God's Table" at the Hyatt Regency Reston. Learn more on the official Council website. Don't forget to register by December 14 for an early-bird discount!  
  • Please keep those with November mission trips in your prayers: St. Barnabas', Annandale to Honduras; St. James's, Richmond to Haiti; St. Stephen's, Richmond to South Africa; and Buck Mountain, Earlysville to Tanzania. If your church is taking a mission trip in November and you are not included on this list, please contact Ashley Cameron at [email protected].     
  • Are you looking for more ways to stay in touch with news and information coming out of the Diocese? Are you a clergy or lay leader looking for new resources? Do you want to share and communicate with your diocesan community? Then stay tuned! The diocesan Communications Office is at work on some new offerings that will help equip you for ministry and connect you with other leaders in the Diocese. More to come this winter!  
  • Dates for the 2013 season of diocesan summer camps at Shrine Mont are now available! Check out the camp website for more info. Registration will open in January. If you have questions or have never been to camp before, please contact Meg Schwarz at [email protected] or 800-DIOCESE x1043.
Diocesan Events    
  • The discernment gathering to discuss the future of diocesan camps at Shrine Mont originally scheduled for October 30 at Grace Church, Kilmarnock will now take place on November 14, still at Grace Church, from 4:30-6 p.m. Hosted by Shrine Mont and the Diocese of Virginia, this is a gathering intended to let you contribute to the planning for our children's future at camp. No advance registration required.     
  • The 2012 Camp Reunion will be held on Saturday, December 29 from 1-4 p.m. at the Falls Church Episcopal, Falls Church.  Please join us as we gather for fun, fellowship and, of course, singing to celebrate 2012 diocesan camps!  For more information please contact Meg Schwarz at [email protected] or 800-DIOCESE x1043.

Other Announcements
St. Margaret's School has announced that Lindy MacDonald Williams has been selected as the 11th Head of St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock. Williams brings with her two decades of experience in independent and girls' school education. She is currently associate head of school at Collegiate School in Richmond. She will officially become head of school on July 1.

The Episcopal Church is currently accepting applications for the Young Adult Service Corps, a mission opportunity for adults between the ages of 21-30. Learn more at

Deacon Christine Garcia and Christ Ascension, Richmond will be sponsoring a sock drive to benefit Tiffanie's Manor, located on 115 North Jefferson Street, just behind the diocesan offices at Mayo House, with the goal to collect a 1,000 pairs/packages of socks for men and women before December 1.  Donations can be left at Christ Ascension or Mayo House. Applications for 2012 Jubilee Ministry grants are now being accepted in two categories: diocesan initiatives and health and nutrition. Jubilee Ministries are congregations or agencies with connections to the Episcopal Church whose mission work affect the lives of those in need, addressing basic human needs and justice issues.

Volunteer Day with the Disaster Preparedness & Response Ministry Team

The Diocese of Virginia
Disaster Preparedness and Response Ministry Team (DOVDPR) will sponsor Volunteer Day this Saturday, November 17 at Aquia Church, Stafford.

Goal/Purpose:  The intention of Volunteer Day is to help individuals and parishes prepare for potential disasters.  Only by being prepared for disasters can we assist others rather than needing assistance.  We will also assist those who are thinking of forming a group to go on a disaster recovery mission become acquainted with the opportunities for 2013,  provide initial contact information for these opportunities, and get the required diocesan training all done in one spot, all in one day.  Additionally, special emphasis will be placed on lessons learned from our recent experience with Hurricane Sandy and review how to help the dioceses to the north of us who were affected by Sandy.

Draft Agenda:
9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Opening/Kick-Off   
  • Presentation by state disaster preparedness representative
  • Report by a  recovery mission team just back from the Gulf Coast
  • Reports from invited dioceses who are hosting recovery teams
  • Panel discussions on recovery experiences and on how to get started and how to plan your mission trip
  • Summary discussions and next steps
  • Lunch from Aquia's soup kitchen ministry (donations accepted) 
The Prevention of Adult Sexual Misconduct workshop will run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse Workshop will run from 1-5 p.m.
