Core Graduates around the World!
Jessica Nygren
It is that time of year for many Institutes to celebrate their graduating students hard work, years of blood, sweat and tears (literally). We join together to celebrate your efforts and send you many blessings as you bring forth your gifts and leadership into the world as Core Alumni. Not everyone was able to submit photos, congrats to all the graduates at RACE California as well! The New York 5th Year Postgraduate projects will be up on the NYICE website soon. Here are a sample of some of this years projects from: Martha Powers 'Applying Core Energetics for People with Differing Abilities' and Sam Cagnina ' Core Energetics and Mindfulness'.

Where the Body Meets the Mind: Applications of New Science in the Core Energetics Practice Kuno Bachbauer, MD, LMFT As a collective of Core Energetics practitioners, we all are essentially contributing to a new way of practicing body psychotherapy. The following series of articles will give Core Energetics practitioners a contemporary understanding of the "tool box" that allows them to be true healers of Body, Mind and Soul. Today will be on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). UNDERSTANDING THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM Because it is at the center point of all psychosomatic (mind-body) thinking, it is well worth it to understand the functions of the autonomic nervous system a little better. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a (largely) unconscious aspect of our nervous system. It is in a constant dialogue with our body systems in order to negotiate an ever-changing hierarchy of needs between our survival strategies and our need for rest and regeneration. Basically there are two modes: the parasympathetic (rest & restoration) and the sympathetic (effort) modes. Other metaphorical ways of understanding these mechanisms are: "Defense versus regeneration", and "self-preservation versus surrender", "action versus rest". Between and beyond these two extreme polarities there is a need for harmony and thriving of the whole organism to afford an integrated social order and higher functioning in our tribe. This is mediated by the so-called "social vagus", a more recent development in our nervous system. The "social vagus" allows us to live and survive together in a community. Together with other major brain centers (limbic system, forebrain) it makes us able to read each other's state of mind and allows us to communicate face-to-face with members our social tribe. This is called "Limbic Resonance" and it is how we "stay in touch" - body to body & brain to brain - with each other! The ANS, as part of our unconscious, organismic system, defines three vital aspects in us. All three aspects represent basic ways of being in the world. 1) our need for defense (Flight-Fight & Freeze) and 2) our need for nurturing (Rest, Restoration, Relaxation). The third vital aspect reflects 3) our need connection and bonding with others. Click this link for a full color explanation chart. |
11 Day Introduction to Core Energetics in Poland
Ala Konokpo-Ulanecki
Our trip was successful, more than I could have ever imagined. We are extremely impressed with the way we were received, the openness and readiness of Polish people for what Core Energetics has to offer. There is hunger for working with the body and so much need for normalizing and including spirituality in process, as well as everyday life.
First there was Lublin, a presentation for women, which in spite of some organizational glitches, still inspired at least three people to join our workshop. The workshop attracted twenty-seven people, mostly young, curious and passionate. In practically every one of them I could see myself from thirty years ago. It was a very surprising and moving experience for me. Next there were presentations in Ldz and Gniezno, and finally the culmination of our whole undertaking in Warsaw. I was so tired during the Friday night presentation that I couldn't even worry about the fact that I still had two solid days of work ahead. I guess this served a purpose - in our determination to do best possible job, we had to use the same tools we were teaching to recharge. The workshop was a great success.
In Warsaw we had a smaller group of sixteen, mature and experienced (mostly professionals) diving deeply in their processes and holding space for each other. The work flowed. It has now been a month since our "core marathon" and I still have a sense that I am arriving. This is the longest coming back I've ever experienced. In some ways it feels like I left a piece of me in Poland and cannot wait to go back. In fact we already are working on solidifying plans for our trip in the fall- of course we will keep you posted! For now, Liz and I thank you all for your support.

A Poem by Marcel Duclois
Nothing else does my heart desire'
than to know the sound
of a heart beat
close to mine.
Oh listen, my heart!
Can you not stay here for no other reason than to be silently still?
Can you not wait? Your noiseless screaming is heard far beyond the stars. The Other is deep within.
Be still. Stay. Stay in your dusty desert cave.
Stay and wait.
The stone will be rolled away.
You will be touched in your darkness by the earth's divine fire. Wait.

Clear the Decks for the
Higher Self (Part 1)
T ed R i s k i n, LCSW
What makes for a good therapy session? Is it more about what we do or who we are? Obviously, it is both. Four years of training provides us with plenty of techniques for doing good stuff, along with the theory to know what to do when. And all of the work we do on ourselves refines our being so that we show up for and connect with our clients authentically. Even so, there are parts of us who will interject themselves while we are leading a session, diluting the Higher Self energy that we would be otherwise bringing.
The term countertransference simply indicates the presence of these parts. Internal Family Systems (IFS) supplies us with a cool method for dealing with them. In IFS, we relate to a person as consisting of Self, which has the qualities that we refer to as Higher Self, and as Parts, which is basically everything else. Parts are either Exiles, which hold difficult feelings and tend to be stuck in traumatic scenes from our past, or Protectors, which have taken on the job of saving us from feeling those pesky Exiles
.
Exiles tend to be the parts that feel lonely, terrified, insecure, not good enough, abandoned, empty, or despairing. Protectors tend to criticize us, try to be perfect, worry about the future, employ addictive substances or behaviors, dissociate, resist, attack and defend, be right, please others, and compel us to perform other dysfunctional actions.

Community News
Dear Patty,
On behalf of Institute of Core Energetics (NY) community, I want to offer our deepest condolences on the loss of your dear son, Seth. You are loved by so many who wish you did not have to bear this pain. None of us knows the unique experience you now face and there are no words to change it. But we hope our love can soften the edges of your pain. We hope our prayers will fortify your strength and courage.
"When a loved one dies, the process of grieving is a completion that allows us to honor that person's life and claim the wisdom we have gained through the relationship. As we receive the gift of understanding, it transcends time and space, simultaneously gifting the soul of the one who has passed over. Grieving is (so much) more than learning to live without a dear one." ~Joan Borysenko
May Seth rest in peace and may you have all the time you need to feel all that you need to feel. Sent with love and prayers. Kate Holt |
Words from Warren
Executive Director Warren Moe
As we close the 2015 school year, it seems a time of reflection on both the past year and a time to look forward into the next. The past year was one of expanded participation in leadership and growth of our student body. Our Board of Directors has grown and the committees have added to their members - they are energized and accomplishing their projects with passion and enthusiasm. We saw growth in our graduate program Continuing Core, and the fifth year project presentations and papers delivered new perspectives for techniques in the therapeutic practice.
Our infrastructure is currently being updated with an automated, online Learning Management System (LMS). This multi-purpose system will allow us to do a range of administrative functions from enrollment to the creation of programming and curriculum. We expect it to be online for the beginning of the 2015-2016 academic year.
The Alumni Committee has launched its Alumni Membership drive and the response is gaining in momentum. They are developing an Alumni Calendar that will list this year's upcoming alumni social and program events. The Continuing Core programing planners have designed workshop events and peer process groups to inspire and illuminate its participants. There are new and different opportunities for alumni to offer their talents, passions and wisdom to our community which has given us all so much to be thankful for.
