Dear Newsletter Reader,

It is our first issue of 2015! We hope that your year has started off strong as ours has.

We have had some exciting projects going on and business changes that we would like to tell you about. We would also like to get you familiar with the many different conferences that will be coming up this year.

In this issue you will read about the transition at our Meyerton facility and 2015 conferences we hope to see you at.

GrafTech Meyerton Facility Transition

Late in 2013 GrafTech took the decision to suspend production of graphite at its Meyerton, South Africa, facility, but to continue warehousing and graphite machining operations. The Refractories team turned that unfortunate event into an opportunity to transform the Meyerton machine shop into a focused, dedicated Refractory Systems machining operation. The new organization improves our responsiveness to the domestic market and gives us a more efficient platform to serve our global customer base.

While the machine shop already had strong capabilities in both equipment and skills, the processes and utilization were not optimized for refractory production. Removing some pieces of equipment, adding others, rearranging flow, and retraining some team members have led to noticeable efficiency improvements. Other buildings in the facility have also been repurposed to better organize incoming, outgoing, and in-process materials.

The transition required several of our team members to learn new functions and improve their understanding of the unique needs of our Refractory Systems customers, a challenge they have accepted with enthusiasm and the same dedication as the rest of our global team. It has also required us to apply Lean principles to establish new supply chains and optimize inventory levels for our entire range of products. This was a multinational, cross-functional effort that involved multiple GrafTech business units.

We're pleased to welcome our Meyerton colleagues to the Refractory Systems team, and invite our customers to visit the transformed facility.
