No Pink Ribbon

Are We Aware Yet 2012 - Views from Women Living with MBC

October is upon us again in all of its Pink glory. Well, maybe not. Last year I wrote an article wondering if the pink that surrounds us during the month of October leads to any behavioral changes that might enable one to get an "early diagnosis," for example. Or, maybe all the pink educates us further about breast cancer. I don't think the pink does any of the above. It doesn't teach us that even if a tumor is detected early, there is a 20 - 30% chance the cancer will metastasize. The pink also doesn't tell you that when your cancer does metastasize you can no longer be a part of the pink team. That you are in fact the one the pink is most afraid of.

Metastatic Breast Cancer Network (MBCN) Annual Conference

MBCN

On Saturday October 13, 2012 (Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day) MBCN held its annual conference in Chicago. The conference is one day long and packed with information covering many topics. There are five general sessions and three breakout sessions.

1. The first general session was given by Virginia Kaklamani, M.D., Associate Professor, Division of Hematology/Oncology at Northwestern and it was entitled, Understanding MBC: How it is Followed in the Clinic and When to Use Standard Care or Clinical Trials.

Dr. Kaklamani discussed the definition of MBC, the pattern of spread based on the type of breast cancer, methods of diagnosis and follow up, and clinical trials. She reported on the difference between each phase of clinical trials and gave a list of questions for patients to ask when considering a trial.

CountUsBe Counted Today

SHARE has joined forces with other organizations in the breast cancer community to help get at least 3,000 people counted as part of the advanced breast cancer community during the month of October. We need your help to reach our goal! All you have to do is go to:

www.advancedbreastcancercommunity.org and click the Count Me button. You'll be showing support for the thousands of people who are touched by advanced breast cancer. The site offers a wealth of information and tools for those living with advanced breast cancer, their loved ones, and caregivers. We helped shape the newly relaunched site and will continue to support its mission to fulfill the needs of those living with advanced (metastatic) breast cancer.
