Ravens Announce Partnership with Habitat
|
 |
L-R: Ravens Team President Dick Cass, future Ward Street homeowner Regina Morrison-Sykes and
Habitat Chesapeake CEO Mike Posko.
|
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake and the Baltimore Ravens All Community Team Foundation (RACTF) have joined together to build houses and further improve the community surrounding the M&T Bank Stadium area.
In a combined effort, the construction of three brand new row homes will take place in Baltimore's Washington Village neighborhood, affectionately known as "Pigtown," which is located on the west side of Russell Street near M&T Bank Stadium. Pigtown is an area in need of help, with approximately one-third of its residents living below the poverty line and with nearly one in eight homes abandoned or in need of significant repair.

The Great Give |
What a difference a day can make. What if everyone came together in one 24-hour period to share their community spirit by giving to their favorite local charities? What a difference it could make.
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is thankful to be a part of The Great Give in 2013.
Go to Habitat's Great Give Page between 7:00 pm on May 15 and 7:00 pm on May 16, 2013 to participate.

Habitat Women Build Guests on WomenTalk Live |

L-R: Habitat homeowner Cynthia Wiggins, WomanTalk Live host Ann Quasman, Habitat volunteer Staci Summers,
Habitat staff member and homeowner Shanita Modlin.

"Joining me in the studio were three women who in their various roles as Habitat homeowners, volunteer, advocate and employee, all have one thing in common - they are passionate about the work being done to change lives and revitalize communities. And, they especially love the opportunity to involve more women in Habitat's work through the Women Build program. Tune in to soak up their passion and find out just how volunteering with Women Build, Global Village or any Habitat program will be a game changer not only for a future homeowner, but for you, too."
-Ann Quasman, host of WomanTalk Live

Stories from ReStore: Used Farmhouse Furniture Highlights the Value of Recycling |
In April, a unique set of vintage farmhouse furniture arrived at the Dundalk ReStore with an important story to tell. The items were delivered by Humanim, one of our regular donor partners, including a dining table, office desk, set of planters, bookshelf and folding wooden chairs. At first glance, many people might have considered the furniture fit for the landfill, but with its rustic charm and antique quality, these gems will be treasured by its new owners who will appreciate their history and value.

Youth Take Time for Community Service |
 |
Youth Service Saturday participants
|
By Bobby Kirby, Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator (AmeriCorps member)
"It is Saturday morning and I am a 10-year-old boy who craves nothing more than a bowl full of sugary cereal and a TV screen featuring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck outsmarting the likes of Elmer Fudd. Sitting in front of the warm glow of the television, I am happy, I am content... I am ignorant that no farther than a stone's throw away from the front door of my home, in my community, there are people, adults and youth like me, struggling through issues of extreme poverty and homelessness."

|
 |
Matt Herzberg on site with Marty Zickgraf
|
By Matt Herzberg, Faith and Coalition Engagement Manager
People have responded to that call.... YOU have responded to that call: by volunteering in Brooklyn and Orchard Ridge, by joining community clean-ups in Habitat neighborhoods, by hosting a golf tournament to raise funds for Habitat's faith-based programs to build homes, and by writing letters to the city and advocating for communities.
Thank you.
Thank you for recognizing that call.
Thank you for continuing your walk.

Baltimore Tree Trust |
Baltimore Tree Trust has been collaborating with residents and organizations to help completely landscape barren blocks in Southeast Baltimore with new street trees. In 2012, volunteers planted 101 new trees and by the end of 2015, working with local residents, they plan to fully landscape the neighborhood with almost 800 new trees.
Habitat has worked in collaboration with Baltimore Tree Trust and every tree on Jefferson Street and Glover Street have been a part of this initiative!

 |
Design students discuss possibilities for a corner store
|
In April, Habitat Chesapeake had an opportunity to see one of its primary focus neighborhoods - the Woodbourne-McCabe community - take a big step forward in its self-initiated effort to revitalize the McCabe Avenue corridor, an historical North Baltimore mainstay once anchored by a thriving central corner store that has been sitting vacant for several years.
