Veterans Day Build Reflection

By Janice Chance, pictured right

When an invitation was extended to the members of the  American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. (AGSM) Maryland Chapter, seven mothers, a sibling of one of our fallen heroes and I made the decision to participate in the Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake Veterans Build Day. We are a 501(C)(3) national nonprofit Veterans Service Organization comprised of mothers whose children died in military service, died as a result of that service, or are missing in action.

Our mission is finding strength in the fellowship of other Gold Star Mothers who strive to keep the memory of our sons and daughters alive by working to help veterans, those currently serving in the military, their families and our communities. Therefore, participating in the Habitat Chesapeake Veterans Build as a volunteer made the invitation more meaningful. It provided us with another opportunity to fulfill our mission of service in honor of our children who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. All us who volunteered on November 10, 2012 had a child that was killed in action in either Iraq or Afghanistan - our motivation for joining the AGSM.

Glover Street Clean Up
Shanita Modlin is a family partner who will be moving to Jefferson Street and Jenice Manning is a family partner who will be moving to Dumbarton Avenue in Pen Lucy. They are both energetic and committed Habitat family partners who exemplify what we mean when we say that Habitat homeowners become assets to their communities! This is a message sent to us by Shanita after helping to clean up Glover Street...

"Jenice and I had the opportunity to clean the street and two alleys on the 400 block of Glover Street. Although hard work, it was an enlightening and rewarding experience. Jenice, along with her sister, and I started cleaning as an awesome trio and by the end of our time at Glover, we met several neighbors and several children who grabbed their personal brooms along with some of our tools and pitched in to give us a hand. They were truly appreciative of us coming to help clean and wanted to know the next time we would be out so that they could continue to help.

Jenice and I also met the owner of a local corner store who wanted information about volunteering with Habitat. He was truly impressed with all of the wonderful work Habitat does. He was interested in helping turn that block of Glover around in a more positive direction.

We wanted to share with you our experience and hope that keeping Glover clean will become a
 continuous project through Habitat.

PS- I told the children that maybe one day their picture could make the Habitat newsletter if they continue to help keep their area clean! :-)"

From all of us here at Habitat Chesapeake, we say, "Thank you, Shanita and Jenice, for setting a wonderful example and for your dedication to our organization!" And, to the children, "Thanks for your efforts, too. You made it into the newsletter. Way to go!"

Spotlight On: Habitat responding to Superstorm Sandy

Habitat for Humanity International has a team in the region affected by Superstorm Sandy. The team is currently assessing the capacity of impacted affiliates and initiating dialogue with potential partners throughout the tri-state region. In a number of affiliates across the area, volunteers are in gear mucking out and clean up homes.

The longer-term Habitat response to the storm's destruction is in the planning stages and will depend on funding.

"I have faith that generous people around the world will open their hearts to support Habitat's efforts as this region seeks to help families rebuild their lives," said Larry Gluth, senior vice president for Habitat's U.S. and Canada office.

According to FEMA, 95,000 people in New York and New Jersey are eligible for emergency housing assistance.

"After working with a friend and fellow AmeriCorps member to collect goods for those affected by Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, words cannot express how amazed and grateful I am for the generosity of my coworkers and community members.

In just one week, people came together and collected
so many items that we needed three full-sized SUVs to transport everything. Thank you to everyone that donated! Your support really helped brighten the lives of those impacted by this disaster."

With 14 different styles, it is easy to find the right fit for any design. Her glazed cherry cabinets added a beautiful touch to her renovation while the stores profits went directly to supporting Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake.
