On Watch in Washington / The Informer

October 5, 2016

Here are some of the highlights of the evening's event.

Right out the gate, Kaine introduced a line that he seemed to have been working on during his days of debate prep.

"On the economy, there's a fundamental choice for the American electorate," Kaine said. "Do you want a you're hired president in Hillary Clinton or a you're fired president in Donald Trump."

Kaine continued, saying, "that's not such a hard choice" and explaining what he called their "hired plan."

Pence pounced on the line calling it "pre-done."

We can't ignore the impact that the next vice-president will have on this country. Pray that voters consider the person that will be second in line to the presidency, and cast their ballots with wisdom.

"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out." (Prov. 10:9)

As thousands of pastors across the nation get ready to partake in the annual "Pulpit Freedom Sunday" on Oct. 2, Scalise and Rep. Jody Hice, R- Ga., introduced the "Free Speech Fairness Act," which would eliminate the longstanding threat of churches and nonprofit organizations being stripped of their tax-exempt statuses or fined if they speak publicly about public policy or endorse candidates for public office.

Freedom of speech in this country is under attack and pastors and non-profits are being targeted to try to silence any influence they may have in the government arena. Pray for this persecution to stop, and for our constitutional rights to prevail.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matt. 5:10)

SHIMON PERES, FORMER PRESIDENT AND VETERAN ISRAELI STATESMAN, DIES AT 93
Of the longest-serving of all of Israel's public servants, it was often rightly said: The story of Shimon Peres is the history of the State of Israel.

Peres, former president, former prime minister, former defense minister, former foreign minister, former head of eight other ministries and the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize winner, was the last surviving member of the state's founding fathers.

Shimon Peres was a dignified statesman who loved Israel and served in many roles to better the country. Pray that men of righteous passion will continue fighting for Israel.  In the words of a noble man, "Whatever exists we believe can be changed for the better."

"But the noble make noble plans, and by noble deeds they stand." (Isa.32:8)

As The New York Times reported Monday, until relatively recently it was rare to hear people referred to as "globalists" but the label is more common now. And while many globalists claim to have the interests of the entire world at heart, the irony is that they have become a tribe of sorts; and they are a wealthy, elite, and powerful tribe for whom national borders are an impediment to their agenda.

Genesis 11 speaks of the Tower of Babel and the danger of the whole world having one language and one speech. Pray that we will stand resolute in retaining our freedoms, property, and rights, and that any move toward a one-world government will be defeated.

"The Lord said, 'If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.' So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city." (Gen. 11:6-8)

As we all know, it's election season. This isn't ever a rosy time for America, filled with rainbows and warm hugs. But if the political season of 2016 has taught us anything, it's that the United States is culturally confused. Competing narratives vie for attention, as we're trying to figure out just who we are as a country. There was a time in our history when it seemed like everyone was a Christian. Now, depending on where in America you live, it can seem like no one is a Christian.

Are we losing our Christian heritage? Were we ever a Christian nation to begin with? And how should churches respond to all of this?

The Word of God never returns void, but accomplishes His purpose.  Pray that the truth of the gospel is declared boldly and that God would give us strategy to reach the next generation.

"To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings." (1Cor. 9:22-23)
