President's Letter

2014 is off to a great start. Not only have we had excellent speakers and attendance at the monthly chapter meetings but we've also continued our Quarterly Breakfast Roundtables and introduced our Fundamentals & Management Affinity Circles targeted to those new to the field and more experienced people.

One of May's highlights was the Capital Campaign Workshop jointly presented by Madison Community Foundation and AFP, Greater Madison Chapter. So many of you volunteered to speak and/or attended and we appreciate your enthusiasm and commitment. I'd like to say a special thanks to the Professional Development Committee including the chairs Amy Overby and Jen Davie, and also to Boris Frank and Tom Linfield for all of their work to make the day successful.

Membership and engagement is important to the organization as new and renewing members are the life blood of our group. As you renew your membership consider encouraging a colleague to join. There are several categories of membership options that can suit a variety of professionals and organizations.

Training is an important focus of the chapter and I want to remind you that scholarships are available for most of the opportunities we offer. Remember to contact Judy Brannstrom, Scholarship Chair, if you are interested in applying.

AFP is not all work - we do have fun. Join us at the AFP Happy Hour on Tuesday, July 15th, 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm on Fresco's rooftop. This event is free to members and friends, appetizers are included and we will offer a cash bar. This will be a great opportunity to network with each other on a warm summer night!

Last but not least, planning for Philanthropy Day is in full swing. This year's event promises to be as successful as last year! The call for nominations is out and we are hoping for a great response. If you have someone in mind that you would like to nominate, please do so!

As always, thank you for your commitment and support of AFP. We have an excellent chapter due to your ongoing participation and enthusiasm.

Chapter President

P-Day Nominations due July 11
Philanthropy Day 2014
Final Call for Nominations!
Deadline to nominate is Friday, July 11

Nominating has never been easier! Our new streamlined nomination forms make recognizing philanthropists and fundraising professionals you admire simple and efficient.

Would you like to honor a special donor or business that has made a difference for your non-profit organization's success? What about an individual who works or volunteers one or more of the hundreds of non-profits in our community and deserves a "shout out" for their contributions?

The impact of philanthropy in the Southeastern Wisconsin community is beyond impressive. As fund development professionals, we join together to promote thoughtful and effective philanthropy in the greater Madison area. One way we demonstrate the impact of our noble work is through our annual Philanthropy Day event. The amazing stories of philanthropic recipients allow us to share the power of philanthropy to our community and recognize them for time, diligence and commitment.

Nominations are being sought by July 11th for the following awards:

  • Outstanding Individual Philanthropist
  • Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser
  • Outstanding Business or Corporation (100+ employees)
  • Outstanding Small Business or Corporation (Fewer than 100 employees)
  • Outstanding Philanthropic Organization and/or Foundation
  • Outstanding Fundraising Professional
  • Outstanding Young Philanthropist
  • Lifetime Achievement

Award recipients will be honored at the 27th Annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon, on Friday, November 7, 2014 at the Overture Center for the Arts.

Highlights from Q2 Breakfast Roundtable

If you are an AFP Madison Chapter member and haven't attended a Quarterly Breakfast Roundtable, you've been missing out - until now.  In response to requests, content from the roundtables will be shared in upcoming Chapter newsletters and through the website.

Here are some highlights from the Q2 Roundtable held on April 24. The topic was "Transitioning Special Event Guests into Donors":

  • One successful conversion story was described by Easter Seals that after the outing brings all the golfers to their Camp where participants eat, receive prizes, etc.  The campers and golfers have some interaction that helps translate the message in a tangible way.
  • Celebrities asked to attend, even if not paid, can add up in costs (meal, lodging, etc), they can be helpful in attracting first-time or occasional participants, but likely means little in getting core supporters to participate.
  • Take surveys after each event to learn what or why they are involved. Sometimes "thon" participants just love to do runs and are not invested in your cause. Surveys may weed them out so you can gear your efforts to attendees who already "buy-in" to your mission.
See all content from both Roundtables on the AFP Madison Chapter website.
