The Australian payments landscape has taken a big step forward in the last fortnight with online travel company Webjet announcing Bitcoin as a payments option on some of their services.  The payments processing will be handled by Australian digital currency company BitPOS. 


 

Also in the news is the appointment of former Virgin Money chief David Curneen as CEO of digital currency company Bit Trade AustraliaThe Australian has given the story a good write up which you can view below. 

 

The Australian Senate's Digital Currency Inquiry is set to hold more hearings in March and April before handing down a report on how to best regulate the industry.  ADCCA looks forward to further engaging with inquiry and those who are called to participate.

 A technology is called "disruptive" if it creates a new market that first disturbs and then displaces an earlier technology. Bitcoin is potentially such a technology and much more. The fact that it can disrupt the largest and most interconnected marketplace in the world-money, banking, and finance-makes it perhaps the most promising investment opportunity of our age.

 

Unlike our current increasingly unstable and unpredictable financial system, Bitcoin has 21st century technologies at its very core. The digital currency and clearing network is open source, mobile, peer-to-peer, cryptographically protected, privacy oriented and native to the Internet. The fusion of these technologies allows for a level of security and efficiency unprecedented in the world of finance. Canadian regulatory authorities enacted new regulations that will require all Québec domiciled cryptocurrency ATM operators and virtual currency exchanges to be licensed. The Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) has stated that it is not attempting to regulate the Bitcoin industry.

 A Singapore company has created a way for customers to buy gold and silver directly from a Lamassu bitcoin ATM. Quantified Assets, a bitcoin-to-precious metals brokerage, has a prototype machine set up in Singapore's HackerspaceSG, which it is using as a showcase to offer its front-end interface to all 118 Lamassu operators worldwide.
