Thank a Teacher This Month!

Did you have a favorite teacher when you were in school?  That one person who encouraged you and inspired you to be more than you ever thought you could be.  You know...that teacher who taught you those life lessons that textbooks simply can't impart. We all had those teachers who were so dedicated to our education, causing us to never forget them.  October 5th is World Teachers Day.  In honor of these significant individuals, let's consider the importance of the role they play in young people's lives.

Children spend more time at school than they do at home. This means the people they encounter at school make a drastic impact in their lives. Teachers are not simply teaching lessons each day.  They're helping children develop socially and emotionally, as well.  What a tremendous responsibility!

Teachers are self-esteem builders.
One of the biggest things that teachers impact is student self-esteem.  Reinforcing self-esteem in the classroom is one of the most important things teachers do. Teachers communicate encouragement and positive feedback to their students, which is particularly vital to the success of struggling students.

Teachers are life skills instructors.
Each day in the classroom, teachers divulge life skills to students that are essential for future success. From completing a resume to appropriate behavior in social situations, teachers are preparing children for real-world events they will face in the future.

Teachers are motivators.
Teachers motivate students to become better than they think they are capable of becoming.  On a daily basis, teachers are reiterating the importance of discipline, responsibility, commitment, and always trying your very best at everything you do.  These are values that are crucial to success.

click here and post your selection on our Facebook page to nominate your favorite teacher (yours or your child's) to win a relaxingFacial at Esthetiques Skin Care and Wellness Center.  Teachers deserve some relaxation, too!  We will select the winner at the end of the month and announce it in next month's newsletter.

Healthy Eating for a More Improved You!

It's not a diet...it's a lifestyle

Eating healthy is easier than you think it is!  If you think of eating as an opportunity to improve your health and overall well-being instead of a dreaded sacrifice, you're one step closer to success. Check out some of the ways you can improve your quality of life by starting a healthy eating program.

Healthy eating keeps you...HEALTHY!
Implementing a healthy diet into your life is the easiest way to fight off many diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. A healthy diet boosts your immune system and enables the body to function as it needs to.  Combining a healthy diet with exercise increases the possibility of living a longer, more vibrant life.

Healthy eating is an effective weight loss tool.
For those of us trying to shed a few pounds, a healthy diet is a must.  We hear all the time about people going on fad diets only to gain the weight right back when they return to normal eating habits.  By sticking to a healthy diet that includes all of the food groups, you can lose the weight and maintain it because you are choosing a healthy lifestyle over dieting, which leads to long-term results.

Healthy eating increases energy levels
Including foods such as lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, and grains in your diet will keep you energized throughout the day.  Processed foods lose the nutrients our bodies need to stay healthy and strong.  But whole, natural foods are packed with vitamins and minerals that we need to stay healthy and vibrant.

Healthy eating can make you look and feel younger.
One of the key components to youthful-looking skin is eating a balanced diet.  The nutrients in fruits and vegetables promote supple, glowing skin.  And don't forget to drink plenty of water.  Your skin thrives on water, so drink up!

Healthy eating eliminates holiday overindulgences!
The holidays are approaching and many of us struggle to keep our waistlines in check during the fun parties and family gatherings.  By leading a healthy lifestyle that incorporates exercise and healthy eating, it is easier to limit fattening, unhealthy food choices.

With the celebration of Halloween this month, parents may be concerned about allowing their children to eat the large amounts of candy they acquire when trick-or-treating.  We suggest setting boundaries to how much your children can eat on Halloween night....perhaps they can indulge a bit.  After that, set a limit (maybe 1-2 pieces) of the amount of candy they can have each day forward. And be sure to continue packing them healthy lunches with fruit when they head off to school to keep them on their healthy track.

Don't get frustrated during the holidays this year.  Adjust your eating habits and get on the path to a healthier, more enjoyable lifestyle.  Your body will thank you!

Pumpkin Soup

A yummy fall treat!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped, about 1/2 cup
  • 3 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin
  • 1 1/2 cups skim milk
  • 2 tablespoons prepared polenta, creamy
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4-1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper

Directions

1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.

2. Cook chopped onions until soft and golden brown.

3. Heat the broth in a good-sized pot, add pumpkin slowly, and bring to a partial boil.

4. Stir in onions, milk, polenta, honey, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, salt, and pepper (pressed garlic might be suitable at this time).

5. Make sure that the ingredients do not clump but are spread throughout the soup.

6. Cook for about 5 minutes or longer until all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed and dissolved and so the soup is thoroughly heated.

7. If at this point it seems chunkier or thicker than desired, use an immersion blender or a regular one to liquefy the soup and blend in the onions.

8. Serve warm with pieces of bread if desired

Ask a Therapist

Q: With the change in weather, I am experiencing patches of dry, flaky areas on my face. When I use a heavy moisturizer, I tend to break out. What should I do to keep my face properly moisturized without causing breakouts?

A: I would recommend using a moisturizer that is non-comedogenic to prevent breakouts like PCA Skin Hydrating Serum. The great thing about PCA SKIN products is that they are non-comedogenic, meaning that the products do not clog pores or cause breakouts. For lightweight instant moisture, I love layering PCA SKIN's Hydrating Serum under a protective broad spectrum SPF during the day and under the appropriate nighttime moisturizer in the evening. With flake-banishing ingredients such as Niacinamide, Pro-Vitamin B-5, Sodium PCA, and Sodium Hyaluronate...dry, flaky skin won't stand a chance.
