Welcome to the DCC Edition of the SBS4DCC newsletter.

Happy Turkeys!  Hope your celebration of the blessing from Our Lord is pleasant and joyous.  I'm having a ham.  The pigs face is wrought with fright but the turkeys are happy.  I have been saving a very special bottle of wine for this day as well.  If everything works out right... well, you get the picture.  Celebrate and be Thankful.

My son and I will also commandeer the dining room promptly after the dinner table is cleared to erect our annual Christmas (yes... I said it... it's that time already too) Lionel trains layout.  Can't wait...  BEST DAY EVER!

I firmly believe after reading so many of your stories in monthly rags that the joy of this hobby truly begins on the kitchen floor with a Lionel set train and a few pieces of fast track.  If we are to plant seeds and share our passion for this hobby, I encourage you to follow my lead with your scale engineers.  They will turn a keen eye to your 1:160 or 1:87 or 1:48 empire soon enough.

May I recommend The Polar Express or Thomas The Train?  Ho, Ho, Ho...

So...  SBS4DCC...  I haven't put out a newsletter in a while.  Not much to say really until today.  If holiday sales pan out, it will be another positive year of sales growth for Streamlined Backshop.  I am Thankful and Blessed.  Thanks to you all.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  The third and early fourth quarter were the first time I saw declining sales year over year but I think that nearly everyone in every business saw the same thing.  Just a deep breath I hope.  The loan payments are current and the bills are mostly paid so there you go...

Some positive news to share is that I reviewed shipping costs once again and was able to pass along another modest decrease in shipping charges.  You read that right... the price of something went down.  Thank you for your patronage.

I am also happy to report that I took a very close look at one of my most popular product lines this week, ESU DCC, and have revised all of that pricing... DOWN.  You read that right... the price of something else went down.  Thank you for your patronage.

I continue to make solid progress on my decoder install backlog and the conversion of the large O scale collection I am currently working on.  My old helper who got tied up with life called the other day looking for a few projects so that will help to expedite matters immensely.  Again... Thankful...

Finally, I continue to add new content to www.SBS4DCC.com including a very useful page about The Infamous 21MTC Interface Connector.  This is everything you need to know, or at least everything I know, about this increasingly popular and sometimes confusing decoder interface.

You may have come across the ESU LokSound v4.0 Pioneer Zephyr Sound FileESU LokSound v4.0 Custom Sound Files, or ESU LokSound v4.0 Dual Prime Mover Sound Files pages.  These are not "official" ESU produced files.  Matt and his team at ESU rule this domain.  These are merely humble attempts to fill in the sound file catalog in the absence of an "official" file for certain prototypes.  All but the Zephyr file are built from existing ESU sound files.  All but the Zephyr file are free of charge for your personal use so please don't jaw at me if you don't like them.  Just tryin' to help...  Also, ESU has released a full series of Dual Prime Mover sound file since I put this page up, go figure. My files are slightly different particularly in the operation of the second prime mover.  I made the effort to build the files and create the page so I plan to leave it up.  If it becomes a problem at any point, I will pull it down.

A couple other random topics include ESU 50321 Cube Speaker and Soundtraxx Decoder Feature Comparison.

Finally, the clinic that never was... SBS4DCC O Scale DCC Clinic - 2015.  Maybe someone on-board The Backshop Flyer can glean a nugget from it.

It really is a great time to be a... Digital Model Railroader!

So with that... All Aboard!

All the best, and once again, Thank You.  Bryan

New ESU 50113 ECoS Mobile Control II Remote Control Handset w/ LAN Cable Mini-Accesspoint and Power Supply

WOW!  Can I get a whoop, whoop?

I am please to introduce the most advanced and most functional throttle to the model railroading community, the ESU ECoS Mobile Control II Remote Control Handset.  I have always liked the sleek, modern feel and functionality of my smart phone as a throttle but always wanted a dedicated device with a real speed control knob to operate my trains.

BOOM BABY!

Here it is.  ESU has hit another home run in my score book with the introduction of this new device.  Word from Pennsylvania is that the new units are stateside and nearly ready to ship.  I expect to have them available to ship in just a few more days.

I am new to the product too but am familiar with the technology having a smart phone and having used the concept on a layout with the Roco Z21.  You can bet I will put up a product review page as quickly as I can.  From reading the manual, which is already available online, and specifications I can tell you now... It's out of the park!

Features:
  • Fully functional DCC throttle operates trains and accessories
  • Android-based open platform design has plenty of room to advance
  • 3.2 inch (480 x 800 pixels, 280 dpi), backlit color TFT display
  • ARM Cortex A8 micro processor clocked with 1.3 GHz and 1GB RAM
  • 4 GB flash memory for storing apps and data
  • USB port and a WLAN interface
Don't miss out on this great new product and order your ESU ECoS Mobile Control II Remote Control Handset now to make this the best Christmas ever!

Coming soon... New SBS4DCC Chuff Cam Kits

Necessity is the mother of invention and I needed an easier, friendlier chuff cam...

Introducing SBS4DCC Chuff Cams.  This new product features super fast, super easy assembly coupled with the proven performance and reliability of magnets and reed switches.  Installation is a breeze.  Simply glue the two cam halves together around a driver axle then mount and wire the reed switch between the live driver and decoder cam input.

The new line of cams will be available in a handful of standard sizes but best of all... I can offer custom sizing to fit nearly any axle diameter ever made.

The first prototypes are in and so far so good.  I am hoping to have a full offering pulled together this season.

Pricing will be about the same as other types of cams already on the market.

Email me at [email protected] with model scale, maximum outside diameter clearances and required axle diameter and I will add your project to my first run file.

New Pages Added To Tutorials, Tips & Tricks

In between all of the stuff of life, I managed to get a couple of new pages of content added to the site recently.

I hope you will find it useful!

Ok, Ok... Not DCC But Noteworthy New Products

Digitrax 16-Bit Sound Files Available Now

This have been pretty quiet at D this year except for the release of several new sound files on the Sound Depot page.

Most (all?) of the new files are built by a fellow modeler by name of John McMasters for his own use.  He has graciously shared his work with us in the spirit of the Digitrax Sound Depot business model.  There are some real jewels in there.  The only caveat is that nearly all of his files are 16-bit so they can only be used with the new SDXN136P and SDXH166D decoder models.

Here is a link to his youtube page.  He also posts new releases and updates on the Digitrax Sound yahoo group regularly.  His work is very impressive and worth a listen.

EMD 16cyl 645E NT

They are on the cusp of releasing several more this year...

In other news, ESU has recently released version 4.4.20 of the LokProgrammer software.  I have been using for a few weeks with no issues.

Just a reminder...  Anyone can use the LokProgrammer software, even without the device, to calculate the required CV values for desired programming changes.  This is a really handy tool and so much easier than trying to read the manual and calculate the values from that text.  Simply download and install the software on your PC, open the desired sound file or create a new one from the default templates, make the desired changes to the file, then... and here's the key... simply select "Tools > Show Changed CVs" from the menu bar and the software will open a dialog box showing the values you would need to manually program into the decoder.  Really easy.  Very powerful.

Zimo

Adapter Board with Screw Terminals

New Zimo Adapter Boards

Two new Adapter Boards from Zimo are "in the mail" and due at SBS4DCC any day.

Adapter board for MTC-21 decoder.

The decoder is plugged into the male connector of the adapter. Large solder pads, the wiring can be easily carried in the locomotive, the common for a variety of equipment terminals (plus lines) performed repeatedly.

The adapter board ADAMTC is equipped with a rectifier, which relieves the rectifier of the decoder, making this less heat generated and it delivers more power.

The ADAMTC adapter board increases the rated motor output of the MX644D to 1.8A continuous load.

The several decoders from the current ZIMO program, namely MX632D, MX634D, MX644D may be used along with ADAMTC "MTC" adapter board ... and other types, such as types with 16 V - are equipped energy storage terminal.

Use this handy portable tool to keep your servos centered while you mount them under the layout.

The tool consists of a battery box connected to a small circuit board that continuously puts out a centering signal for the servo (1.5 ms pulse).

Keeping your servos properly centered while mounting is the key to making the servos work best.

The battery box has an on/off switch to save your batteries when not in use.

Everyone using servos for turnouts needs one of these.
