Welcome to the April 2014 edition of my monthly newsletter.
Wow... The snow finally melted away this week. Time to start thinking about all of those new home-improvement projects and repairs. On second thought, there's no reason to get in a big hurry. Seems to me that this is a great time to focus in on some layout updates and a few more decoder installations before summer vacation sneaks up on us, right?
I hope you will shop SBS4DCC as you work through those projects. I offer locomotives, rolling stock, track and landscaping products in addition to one of the best selections of DCC products on the planet.
One minor change I intend to make going forward is the Backshop Flyer will morph into the Backshop Scoot. As many of you know I run around here like Jo-Jo and his One-Man Circus. It takes a lot of time to generate this newsletter once a month so I would like to try a smaller version with maybe one or two announcements of pre-orders or new product deliveries that are more timely and focused.
I welcome your feedback. I may not reply to all but I will read it. I will find out quickly that you don't like the changes if I start to see folks bailing out before the next scheduled station stop.
Thank you for your interest, your patience and your patronage.

All Greens To SBS4DCC |
In the news this month...
Coming soon from SBS4DCC...
The bill is paid and Customs has been notified... the 8x12 Cube's are on the way!
Pre-orders will be shipping any day now.
More cube options! Introducing the Boiler Baffle, the 2x2, and the Isobaric Chamber.
The new models should be available in the coming weeks.
|
|
|
|
The Boiler Baffle
The boiler baffle is designed to provide maximum baffle volume for speakers mounted in the boiler of a "smoker".
|
The 2x2
The name says it all...
Why? More speakers provide more volume. More volume means you can turn down the volume. Lower volume means you don't have to drive the amp and speaker at 100% all the time just to hear it. The amp and speakers will produce better quality sound and last longer when they are not maxed out all the time.
|
The Isobaric Chamber
This is another concept baffle for those who really like to experiment with sound quality.
The production version of this chamber should be about an inch long to allow the installer to adjust the volume of the inner chamber to achive the best sound. |

The 4-4-0 locomotive was a common sight on North American rails in the 1800s.
Approximately 25,000 4-4-0s were produced, before being replaced by larger locomotives in the 1900s.
Popularized in American culture and immortalized on movie and TV screens, these locomotives are widely known for their service in the Civil War and in the "Old West".
Features:
- Colorful decoration based on paint schemes from the late 1800s and early 1900s
- Smooth-running motor
- Operating headlight
- Separately-applied bell and handrails
- Factory-equipped with AccuMate couplers
- Flared or straight stack as per the prototype

The F7 was the fourth model in GM-EMD's successful line of F-unit locomotives, and by far the best-selling cab unit of all time. It succeeded the F3 model in GM-EMD's F-unit sequence, and was replaced in turn by the F9. Final assembly was at GM-EMD's La Grange, Illinois plant or GMD's London, Ontario facility.
The F7 differed from the F3, primarily in internal equipment (mostly electrical) and some external features. Its continuous tractive effort rating was 20% higher (e.g. 40000 lb for an F7 with 65 mph gearing, compared to 32500 lb for an F3 with the same gearing.
A total of 2,366 cab-equipped lead A-units and 1,483 cabless booster or B-units were built. (Note: the B-unit is often referred to as an "F7B", whereas the A-unit is simply an "F7".)
Many F7s remained in service for decades, as railroads found them economical to operate and maintain. However, the locomotive was not very popular with yard crews who operated them in switching service because they were difficult to mount and dismount, and it was also nearly impossible for the engineer to see hand signals from a ground crew without leaning way outside the window. As most of these engines were bought and operated before two-way radio became standard on most American railroads, this was a major point of contention. In later years, with the advent of the "road switchers" such as the EMD GP7, F-units were primarily used in "through freight" and "unit train" service where there was very little or no switching to be done on line of road.
Model Features:
- DCC Ready
- Golden-white LEDs
- Powerful Drive
- Prototype Specific Details
- Etched Grilles
- Wire Handrails
- Multiple Road Numbers
The HO scale version of these models are also available now, with and without sound. I am hoping to add a few units to stock but you can place a back order for these in the meantime. I can have most models available to ship in two or three weeks.

The GMD SD40-2(W) is a Canadian-market version of the SD40-2 diesel-electric locomotive, built for the Canadian National Railway by the Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada Ltd. (formerly General Motors Diesel) of London, Ontario; 123 were constructed between May 1975 and December 1980.
The major difference between the SD40-2(W) and a regular SD40-2 is the fitment of a wide-nose Canadian comfort cab, commonly denoted by adding a 'W' in the model name (although the GMD designation on the builders plates remained 'SD40-2').
Model Features:
- DCC Ready
- Golden-white LEDs
- Powerful Drive
- Prototype Specific Details
- Etched Grilles
- Wire Handrails
- Multiple Road Numbers

They will be releasing a new model of the Pennsylvania RR 4-8-2 M1a Mountain with Paragon2 Sound! Killer.
The success of the M1 Mountain-type locomotives prompted the Pennsylvania Railroad to order 100 more locomotives of the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement in 1930, though several upgrades were incorporated in the new machines. The new locomotives became the M1a class and had a longer wheelbase than the M1's due to the addition of the Worthington feedwater heater. They also received the new larger class 210F75 tenders, which became known as the coast-to-coast tenders. The first 50 M1a locomotives (#6700 - 6749) were built by Baldwin; Juniata Shops (later known as Altoona Works) built the next 25 M1a's (#6750-6774), and the remaining 25 were built by Lima and numbered 6775-6799. Starting in 1946, 41 of the M1a's received further improvements by increasing the boiler pressure and the addition of circulators to the firebox. The improved M1a's became the M1b class. The best way to tell them apart is to look for the circulators on the firebox, above the running boards - those round objects in a diagonal line that look like wash-out plugs.
The PRR 4-8-2's were considered to be the finest of the Pennsy's steam locomotives. They were designed as dual service locomotives and were put to the test hauling passenger trains, general freight, and in the end even the heavy ore trains, which there were never intended to pull. They did it all in style!
This is our first run of the PRR M1a's and M1b's equipped with our new Paragon2 Sound System. Below we describe all the new features that you'll enjoy.
This will be a popular model due in just in time for Christmas so be sure to Pre-Order your units today.

This handy little decoder can be used to drive LEDs in a variety of lighting applications. It can be used to drive 3-LED signal heads. it is set up for JMRI (type Double Output). Can also be used to light a building or a car. with the flicker function it can imitate a flickering light bulb, a welding arc or a campfire. Although the outputs are marked R Y G for ease of wiring to a signal head, any color LED can be used. In addition there is a mode for driving a 2-lead bi-color LED.
The decoder uses 2 consecutive DCC addresses - one controls the R output and the other controls the G output. If both are on then the Y output is lit.
