Welcome to the combined February/March 2014 edition of my monthly newsletter.

February has seen record snowfall here in central Indiana. But warm weather prevailed and it has disappeared, all but the huge piles that got pushed anywhere there was space.  Other than travel to the regular forty, my children's sports events, and a trip or two out for a cup of hot coffee, I have been hard at work in the shop filling orders and converting locos.  Thanks to all for the opportunities.

I hope you will keep SBS4DCC in mind as you dig out old projects or tear into new ones over the next few months. I offer locomotives, rolling stock, track and landscaping products in addition to one of the best selections of DCC products on the planet.

Thank you for your interest, your patience and your patronage.

Gardner Bender Liquid Electrical Tape.

I am pleased to announce the I have finally found a reasonably priced source for the liquid electrical tape I speak of frequently.

This is hands down my favorite product I keep on my work bench. I apply it to my work area with a tooth pick or even scrap or resistor wire lead.

I use it for everything... adhesive to seal and secure my cube speakers, blackout to hide LED lights inside the cab, magic plastic repair stuff to fix broken loco drawbars... even as insulation for solder joints and exposed wire leads on LEDs.

It is 100% opaque and dries super thin.

Best part is no heat is required so wires do not get brittle from exposure to flame.

There is simply no better solution for insulating DCC decoder wire solder joints. Period.

Great stuff really. It would probably even work better than that green snot stuff for making traction tires. Dries super thin and even.

Is it messy? Maybe... that's why I use a little at a time on the end of a tooth pick. If I happen to drop a little bit where I don't want it, I just let it dry and peel it off.

Now Arriving, Track 1...

Kato N-Scale Aluminum Autoracks Amtrak Phase IVb CN CP 4-Car Sets are here!

The Autorack (or "Auto Carrier") is a piece of railroad rolling stock built for a specific purpose - to transport cars. Commonly used to transport cars from the manufacturer to larger automotive distributors (before they're loaded onto the semis that are commonly seen on highways), they are also used on services such as Amtrak's Auto Train - a special train which operates between Lorton, VA and Sanford, FL in which passengers can load their cars aboard any one of the 20-30 trailing Autorack cars and enjoy a luxurious ride down the United States' east coast, the end of which they can take their car with them for the continuation of their journey.

This particular type of Autorack is quite modern - first introduced in 2004 in Canada, this fully enclosed autorack is built with an Aluminum shell that is more weather resistant than the older style "open" or "grated" Autorack cars, and with a roomier interior and smoother ride that better protects the cars within.

Model Features:

Shock absorber construction and all wheel electrical pickup on blackened metal wheels promise a smooth ride with the capacity for aftermarket additions such as FREDs or other EOT lights.

Modern appearance matching the Amtrak body style (CP and CN versions will use finely printed detail to replicate the perforations along the side of the body).

Arranged in packages of four with individually printed car numbers.

The Amtrak versions of this release will be an ideal match for Phase IVb Superliners for modeling the Amtrak Autotrain!

Now Arriving, Track 2...

The latest release of N Scale Atlas RS3's are in stock and ready to ship.

Well over 1,300 RS-3 road-switcher locomotives were built by ALCO between 1950 and 1956. It can be considered one of the most successful four-axle diesel road-switchers ever produced by the builder. These 1,600hp locomotives were powered by an ALCO 244 V-12 engine which was complimented by rugged GE electrical components. The RS-3 was truly a versatile locomotive. It could be found in virtually every type of service from passenger and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments. Original owners of the RS-3 tended to be in the eastern and central regions of the US (with heavier concentrations in the northeast and southeast).

During this same time-period, ALCO offered a six-axle road-switcher which was more commonly found in the west. The RSD-4/5 was externally very similar to the RS-3, having six-axle trucks as an obvious spotting feature. They produced the same 1,600hp as an RS-3, but offered increased tractive effort due to the use of a larger generator. Many RSD-4/5s were assigned to operate in mountainous territory (with varying degrees of success) on the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and the Utah Railway.

Model Features:
  • Golden-white LEDs
  • Directional lighting
  • Separately-applied painted handrails (where appropriate)
  • Blackened metal wheels
  • Scale Speed motor
  • Factory-installed AccuMate magnetic knuckle couplers
  • Accurate painting and printing
