Vehicle Sticker Upgrades Expand to Highwood

When Highwood residents receive their vehicle sticker renewals in a few weeks, they will have the opportunity to upgrade their vehicle stickers to support the 112 Education Foundation.  We are excited to expand our Drive for Education program to Highwood and encourage all Highwood residents to upgrade.

April 16 Board Meeting:  Alternate Configurations
The Board of Education is moving forward with deciding on a district reconfiguration plan.  Architects are continuing to develop the middle school campus model, and are concurrently developing other options.  At the April 16 Board of Education meeting, the district's architectural firm Nagle Hartray will present three alternate configuration options, each consisting of two separate middle schools serving grades 5-8, and six K-4 elementary schools.  They will also present updated information related to the middle school campus model.  Additionally, one community member will present an alternate option consisting of a 5-8 middle school campus on the SW/RO site, with five feeder elementary schools: Indian Trail, Oak Terrace, Edgewood, Ravinia and a new elementary school on the current West Ridge site owned by the Park District of Highland Park.

April 21 Board Meeting:  Review of Options
At a special meeting beginning at 5 p.m. on April 21, the Board of Education will discuss the options at the April 16 board meeting, and evaluate them using criteria developed by the SCFFAC committee, along with a decision-making tool developed by the board during a series of workshops in February and March.

Community Proposal Update
Thank you to the community members who submitted correspondence, questions and ideas in response to the Board of Education's call for community proposals to reconfigure the district.  One community member will be sharing his idea with the board at the April 16 meeting (see first item in this article). Other ideas and questions submitted included:
  • Is it feasible to construct a middle school campus on either the Sunset Valley or Highland Park Country Club golf courses?  The answer---No, because both golf courses are situated on flood plains which greatly limit the potential building area.
  • Would the district consider keeping its current configuration?  A comprehensive two-year study by a citizen's committee found that maintaining the district's current configuration is not financially viable.  In order to do so, the district would need to ask its residents to support a permanent tax rate increase in its education fund, along with another tax rate increase to support a bond issue to renovate its twelve buildings.
  • Would the board consider merging with District 109? This would require the support of both communities.  It is not something that the board has discussed to date.
Upcoming Topics at Board meetings
In addition to topics related to district reconfiguration, other items of interest to community members at upcoming board meetings include:

  • April 16:  A video highlighting the first year of the District's personalized learning initiative MyPath will be shown at the beginning of the meeting.  Look for the video in the next issue of 112 Seconds. A full report to the board about the program will be presented in June.
  • April 21:  A proposal to study the possibility of full-day kindergarten will be presented following the board's evaluation of district reconfiguration proposals discussed at the April 16 meeting.  The April 21 meeting begins at 5 p.m., but the discussion about full-day kindergarten will be at the end of the agenda.
Ooh la la!  Visit our trés bon French Cafés
French Cafes
Our middle school French students enjoy cooking up and serving a French breakfast.  All community members are welcome.  Thanks to the 112 Education Foundation for their generous support.

If you can't get to Paris this spring, do the next best thing: Treat yourself to a French Café experience at our three middle schools. French students will be serving up homemade crépes and other treats in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Health Life/Safety Study Itemizes
Required Facilities Expenditures
At the April 7 Board of Education meeting, the architectural firm Nagle Hartray presented results of a state-required Health/Life Safety study of the district's 12 schools.  The study found that the district will be required to make $12.6 million in urgent or required repairs, and an additional $3.1 million in recommended repairs, for a total of $15.7 million.

Illinois requires that all public school districts conduct a Health/Life Safety study every 10 years to identify items that could present health or life safety hazards to students and staff. These items are classified in the school code into three state-defined categories:  Urgent, Required, and Recommended.  These items include the most pressing structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing needs, among others.

Under state law, the district was not required to complete the study until December 2015, but  commissioned the study early in order to develop the information in tandem with the facility studies being done to develop a plan for district reconfiguration.

Special Education Services Parent Survey
All parents of children who receive any type of special education service should have received an email earlier this week asking them to provide feedback through a short survey.  This survey will help the district identify strengths and areas for improvement in our special education services and programs.  Please help us by taking a few minutes of your time to complete the survey, which will remain open through April 15.

The district is working with the WestEd Center for Prevention and Early Intervention (CPEI) to assist us with a comprehensive review of our special education programs and services.  All survey responses will be kept confidential. Survey results will be returned directly to WestEd; and the district will not see individual responses, only aggregated data.

As part of this review, there will be two English-speaking focus groups designed to provide additional information about our special education services for students:  Monday, April 20 from 1 to 2 p.m., and Wednesday, April 22 from 7 to 8 p.m., and one Spanish-speaking focus group on Wednesday April 22 from 7 to 8 p.m. There are limited spaces available, and participants will be chosen to provide a cross-representation of the district.  If you are interested in participating in a focus group,  please contact Wendy Kane at wkane@nssd112.org or (224) 765-3047
