Ten Times the Internet Speed for Half the Price:  Board members voted to approve a new 5-year agreement with Comcast that will boost the district's bandwidth speed to 1 gigabyte, ten times faster than the current speed.  The contract for the increased bandwidth and internet connectivity is at a rate of $13,495 a month, compared with the district's prior contract with AT&T for $23,000 a month.  Half that cost is reimbursed under the federal e-rate program, which allows districts to apply for discounts for telecommunications services. The total cost to the district for the 5-year contract is approximately $413,000. The district will use some of the savings to invest in updated infrastructure, like new switches and routers. to allow it to take full advantage of the higher speed.

Common Core Standards:  For the past two years, the District's Department of Teaching and Learning has been preparing teachers for profound changes in the classroom.  The standards were the subject of a presentation to board members Wednesday by curriculum coordinators Stephanie Cardella and Susan Sarmiento.  The new Common Core Standards, which have been adopted by 45 states including Illinois, will provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. This year, teachers have incorporated curriculum aligned to the standards in math classrooms in Grades K-5 and English Language Arts classrooms in Grades 6-8.  In the 2013-2014 school year, all district math and ELA classrooms will have curriculum aligned with the Common Core.  These standards:
  • Are aligned with college and career expectations
  • Are clear, understandable and consistent
  • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills
  • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards
  • Are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society
  • Are evidence-based

"Common Core Standards are much more attuned to what kids will need as we prepare them for the 21st century," said Superintendent David L. Behlow.

Differentiation:  A key component of the district's Strategic Plan is to provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners.  District Learning Coordinators Stephanie Cardella and Sue Sarmiento presented to board members the reasoning behind that and how it is accomplished.

Parents Feedback Sought
Take the Illinois 5Essentials Survey
North Shore School District 112 invites all parents to share their thoughts about their child's experience at school. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is being administered at public schools across the state, and is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of each school.  The survey identifies five indicators of student success:  Effective Leaders, Collaborative Teachers, Involved Families, Supportive Environments and Ambitious Instruction.
If 30 percent or more parents at each school complete the survey, a report will be generated that will be included with the state school report card in October.
Please help our district reach the 30 percent goal at each school by clicking on the link below to take the survey.  Only one survey per household should be completed for each school.

District Alumni Invited to Apply for NSEA College Scholarship

The scholarship review committee of the North Shore Education Association (NSEA) is now accepting applications from high school seniors who are alumni of District 112 schools and plan to enter college to pursue a future career in teaching. The successful applicant will receive a $2,000 scholarship to be used for college expenses.

"We are very excited to be offering the scholarship again this year," said Pamela Kramer, president of the North Shore Education Association, the collective bargaining unit that represents district teachers.  "We always get great applicants from our outstanding group of high school seniors.  We are proud to offer this assistance to those who eventually want to enter the teaching profession and make a difference in the lives of children."

The NSEA has been honoring students with this scholarship for over 18 years.  Two years ago, this scholarship was renamed in honor of Fern Kravets, a former guidance counselor at Northwood Junior High School who devoted her professional life to serving the students of Highland Park.  Kravets passed away in 2010 and is remembered fondly.

Fern Kravets scholarship applications are available on the North Shore Education Association website. The deadline is April 16.
