Tentative Contract Agreement Reached
The North Shore School District 112 Board of Education and the North Shore Education Association reached a tentative agreement on a contract in the early morning hours of October 17 after a marathon 17-hour negotiating session.
The tentative deal allows the board to stay within its parameters of maintaining a balanced budget, not drawing from the district's reserve funds for ongoing operational expenses such as salaries and benefits, and continuing to provide children with the same level of services, programs and staffing, said Board of Education President Bruce Hyman. The proposed agreement also meets the union's objectives of obtaining a fair contract that remains competitive with other districts, said NSEA President Pamela Kramer.
District 112 Superintendent David L. Behlow said he was very pleased to welcome children and staff back to school on October 17. "These past weeks have been difficult, and we have struggles to overcome, but our common goals bring us together," he told staff members. "Each one of us, regardless of our role in the district, feels the same calling: to nurture, inspire and engage our students every day. I am looking forward to continuing the year in a spirit of renewed partnership, working together to overcome our challenges, celebrating our successes, and learning and growing together."
More details about the contract will be released after board members and union members officially approve the final agreement. At its November 20 meeting, the Board of Education will also determine when the day of school students missed due to the strike will be made up.

Gifted Services Evaluation
North Shore School District 112 recently completed a comprehensive analysis of its programs to serve gifted and talented students, with an aim toward examining how services in that area can be improved, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Heidi Wennstrom told board members on October 2. The district worked with an outside consultant to gather information related to the quality of its current gifted programs and curriculum, and evaluated the program against state-of-the-art standards developed by the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC). "There is a significant need in North Shore School District 112 to meet the needs of high-level learners, challenge them with rigorous, inspirational content and to ensure that growth in skill acquisition happens each and every school year," Wennstrom told board members. The review involved five full days of classroom visits to 43 general education, gifted education and humanities classrooms across the district, and provided valuable data that the district will use to identify how the program can be strengthened and made more consistent throughout the district in order to insure effective differentiated instruction for high-level learners. Teachers of Gifted Education and Humanities will work with consultants Carolyn Callahan, Ph.D. and Jessica Hockett, Ph.D. during the year ahead to develop a program definition, guiding philosophy, identification process, and standards-based curriculum.
