We are the CEREAL church!
Cereal
For a long time, Grace
Church has been delivering canned goods and other food donations down to the St. Luke's/St. Paul's Food Pantry in Bridgeport. They urgently need donations of all kinds of groceries, but one of the items that they seem to run out of and need a lot of is cereal.

If all of us could remember to pick up a box of cereal (or two or more!)  each time we shop, we'll be able to make a wonderful and much needed contribution for the food pantry each week.  There is a collection basket at the main entrance of the church, and also one in lower Lewis Hall.

Dear friend,
Assisi

"and they said to him, 'Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.'"

-Mark 10:35

Sometimes people want to treat God like a fairy godmother or a magic genie with special powers to give us what we want. With God, nothing is impossible, but what makes us think that what we want is what God wants? Perhaps our own perspective is not the best place to start. When some of the disciples ask special favors of Jesus in the Gospel today, he tells them that, in effect, they need to stop focusing on what they personally want from God and start thinking more about what God wants from them. After all, Christ himself came not to be served but to serve. Therefore as disciples, we're called to serve one another and to demonstrate God's love in the world rather than just seeking to be content recipients of God's love ourselves. As the well know prayer from St. Francis says, "Lord, Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life." In what ways has that prayer taken shape in your life?

Here at Grace Church we are dancing with life's big questions. If you're searching for a community of faith to belong to, we invite you to come to explore, come to connect and come to believe among us here at Grace Church. We'd enjoy both your company and your participation as we follow in the way of Jesus and learn and grow in discipleship together.
Peace,

Diocesan Convention is October 19th & 20th

The annual convention of the diocese meets in Hartford tomorrow and Saturday. Elsa and Nancy will represent us as clergy delegates, and Dave Varker will be our lay delegate. Additional attendees from Grace are: Sarah Ginolfi, John Chamberlain, Chris Stapleton, Carl Worth and Bo Worth. The theme of the convention this year is "Claiming, Equipping and Sending," and Grace Church has taken active part in planning and leading the convention. Elsa, Ron Voges and John Chamberlain attended the convention planning session in August, and Elsa and John have been invited to lead part of the opening session on Friday morning.  Please extend your thanks to those who have taken time and energy to represent us in the wider church! If you have any questions about the upcoming convention, you can speak to any of our delegates. During this Sunday's coffee hour, the attendees will report about the convention and be available for questions.

Congratulations, Grace Church!
We increased our pledging 15% this year! It was a great Commitment Sunday last Sunday, including a delicious Thanksgiving dinner (click HERE to see pictures). Thank you to everyone for your real support of our church's mission.

Can You Pitch In?
On Wednesday, October 24, the Episcopal Churches of Trumbull are hosting a dinner for those in need at Christ Church in Stratford. If you can donate a box or two of penne pasta or are willing to donate a cake (of any kind), please take a moment right now to email Elsa and let her know so we can let Trinity Church know what Grace Church is able to contribute. And if there is someone willing to volunteer that evening, they are also in need of another server.

Thanks!

P.S.   Pasta or a cake that has been frozen can be brought to church this Sunday. Otherwise, you can drop your donation off at Trinity Church in Nichols on the morning of the 24th.

Broadway on Main Street
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and in honor of this important cause, Grace Church will be hosting a fundraiser for the Center for Women and Families (CWF) on Saturday, November 10th. Performers from all over town will gather to share their talents in a Broadway cabaret from 7-9 PM.   Proceeds will benefit the good work of CWF.  Come out for an evening of good music and good fun for a good cause!  If you'd like to pitch in, please speak to anyone in the choir. We'll need help with set up, clean up, decorations, beverages and snacks.  The suggested donation at the door will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. We hope to generate a good donation above our expenses for this event, so spread the word and invite your friends!   Flyers are available in the office for you to post around town.  Pick them up from Maryann or ask to have it emailed to you to print.
