Dear friend,

"Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.

He has been raised; he is not here"

-Mark 16:6

Easter is this Sunday - the day we proclaim the strange yet assuring news of the resurrection. In our Gospel reading this Sunday we'll hear just how hard this news was for the disciples to swallow. To tell the truth, it is still kind of hard to swallow. What do you make of it? What do you see in it? Where do you see yourself in this ancient story?

Leading up to Easter are the dramatic days of Holy Week, which, if observed, often bring new insights and understanding of the Christian story. Have you ever experienced the full Holy Week liturgy cycle? Holy Week and Easter are the highest holy days of the Christian year, and the Episcopal liturgies are especially moving. Traveling through the week and marking each event through ritual is a powerful spiritual exercise. It invites you into the mysteries of Jesus' life, death and resurrection in a unique way, and therefore invites you more deeply into the mysteries of your own life. I invite you to take part in any or all of this full week's liturgies if you can. You will not be sorry to experience the beauty and power of Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday

We'll commemorate the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday with a simple footwashing service and then an agape meal - a simple potluck supper - right here in the church under the Last Supper window. Eating together here in the church is a very special experience. Following the meal, we "strip the altar" together. All the decorations and linens and fixtures are removed and the altar is stripped bare in preparation for the solemn Good Friday service. Please bring a simple plate of vegetarian food to share with others.

Ecumenical Good Friday Service

The churches of Trumbull will gather on Friday at noon at the Trumbull Congregational Church for a communal Good Friday service. Elsa will be taking part in the service, along with many other of the town's clergy. All are welcome.

Good Friday Liturgy at Grace

Our Good Friday Liturgy takes place at 7 pm on Friday evening. This is a simple and powerful liturgy that ends with the church in darkness, with people leaving in silence. It's a dramatic and meaningful way to prepare for Easter.

The Great Vigil of Easter

Bishop Laura Ahrens, the three priests of Trumbull, our deacon, our seminarian, all our acolytes and our choir will make a very grand procession as we welcome the arrival of Easter at the great Vigil. Don't miss this wonderful and moving event at which at least two people will be baptized, and four will be received into the Episcopal Church by the bishop. We will all get the opportunity to reaffirm our baptism. A reception with desserts and coffee/tea will follow. Please invite your friends from Christ Church and Trinity Church to come along and sit with you! Rides will be available for those who'd rather not drive at night. We're hoping the whole church will be together and present for this very special night!

Easter Sunday

Our Sunday morning Easter service with festive Easter music will be followed by a special Easter potluck brunch. Please bring a special brunch item or pastry to share!

Inviting All Runners & Walkers!

Bishop's 5K
May 19, 2012

For the past two years Grace Church has taken part in the Bishop's 5K for Kids in West Hartford.  The first year, we had a team of three runners.  Last year we had a team of 5 runners/walkers.  This year, I hope we have even more!

And what's more, the three Episcopal Churches of Trumbull are teaming up this year into one mega-team - the Spirit of Trumbull - in an effort to make an even bigger difference in the lives of at-risk kids in CT.  The money we raise together will go to innovative preschool, after school, educational, recreational and camping programs.  It'll be great to join together in outreach in this fun way and hopefully the Spirit of Trumbull can make a significant donation to the fund this year.
